  • Servicing your field Generators - Kipor KGE1000Ti

As you may have seen in my other thread, I now have one of these Kipor Gennys

I'd like to give it a service before the season sets in...

I have had a read through the manual and it mentions a few service items

Spark Plug (Easy enough, got one on order)
    Oil
Air Filter (Think they refer to it as something else but thats what it is)
Spark Arrestor (Goes in the exhaust - I assume to stop sparks/flames exiting the exhaust?)

So I've been into halfords today and the only oil I could find that seemed to match the manuals specs is:

    Castrol Power1 4T (4-stroke) 10w-30 Motorbike oil API: SJ

I reckon this is the best option for it but was wondering if any others have any suggestions (I've not opened the bottle yet so can be returned)

Also does anyone know where I can get a new Air filter & Spark Arrestor from?

I've looked on Kipor's website but can't seem to see all the parts for this model?

    Cheers
    Matt

P.S. - Tried the Genny for the 1st time today - over the moon with it =))))))))

On the website/manual it recommends a "High Quality 4 Stroke 10w-30 oil to API: SG,SF"

Also to keep in mind is the engine in the genny revs at around 5500 rpm - for motorbike engines this is a normal level whereas a car revs much lower... Hence why I took a look at the motorbike oils and found this castrol one.

That is an option - the manual does suggest that but I'd like to bung a new one in there if I can..

Am I right in thinking if you wash the air filter out you then need to soak it in engine oil before refitting?

10/30 or 5/40, air filter clean out & lightly soak or spray with oil, spark arrestor will only need to be replaced if it packs up.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

Thanks for that - I will have to dismantle the exhaust check see what condition its in.

Thanks Kev - will see what happens.

This oil i've bought seems like it'll be good for the job so I'll use that - its a high quality 4 stroke oil which is what the manual asks for.

A light flash a code?? Whats that?

                      A Little update:

I have started on the service job on the Genny...

I had it running for 5-10 mins get the oil warmed up ready for draining..

Drained the oil out - omg it was like black sludge! Couldn't believe it!

So I drained as much as i could out of it - refilled with the said castrol oil, which turns out is more of a pinkish-red than a brown - refilled to the top.

Pulled out air filter - this was looking in better shape, but washed it out anyway, allowed to dry, then dabbed some oil on it, worked it in, squeezed excess out, refitted.

Spark plug - easy job, old one looked "ok" but replaced anyway.

Now heres where it gets interesting...

Took the exhaust and trim off - expecting to find a dirty Spark Arrestor - but there wasn't one in there!

SO i'm missing the spark arrestor altogether so tomorrow Kev I'll be on the phone to that shop to see if they have something/can source one.

                      Already scanned google/ebay but nothing?

These gennys have such a small sump I have plenty of oil left over, So I plan on doing another oil change after a few uses, as like a cleaner after seeing the old oil that came out of it.

                      Cheers guys

This one is a 4 stroke, i'm wondering if it could be a print error in the manual? there seems to be a few print errors.

oh and i've emailed kipors service dep and its bounced back saying cant deliver it to their inbox?

I've just phoned Grass & Ground, they said they'd not heard of a Kipor before nor do they have the part i'm after, all they said is it won't affect the running of the engine but its job is to keep hot bits from escaping the exhaust.

So really I'm still no better off =/

I will try ringing Kipor next.

Just spoken to an engineer at Kipor

UK Models do NOT come with a Spark Arrestor

Hence why you can't get them anywhere!

He said the manual is a very generic manual distributed with all machines everywhere, but its only the American units that are fitted with Spark Arrestors. This is because they have very dry forests and hot sparks have been known to cause forest fires.

Of course in the UK, everythings so damp we don't have that problem!

So at least thats sorted now.
