  • Wind speeds and learning .

    Hi ,

Another what may seem daft question to some and I know its probably down to the pilots skill level but ?

What do you think are safe wind speeds to learn safely in for

    A) Blade 450 3d

    B) T Rex 500 fb

    C) T Rex 600 nitro

Just wondering what your thoughts were ?

    Thanks
    Alex

if your a total beginer, then forget all wind with the 450 and possibly the 500. I think the simple rule is don't try anything in the wind until until your really comforable with the move, without wind, to be sure of avoiding mishaps!
This was certainly the case when I learnt with a flybar..... it may be a bit different now with fbl though. The fbl 500 and 600 take quite a strong wind, but can still lose altitude very quickly in a breeze...be warned! Gradually though over a period of time you become more confident in the wind. Just dont push it too far in the early stages and wait for the calmer days.

It;s not the wind its the gust range. You can fly easily in steady 10mph wind but get horribly caught out landing in 0-10mph gusts with a 450. thankfully ground effect will smooth a lot of it out for you.

It's not really about crashing, but more about confidence. If you try to big a step it can destroy your confidence in the early stages. Once you can crash without denting confidence you can do what you want. It isn't as simple as wind strength or even gusts. Wind can be very complicated. It can be nice and smooth, but it can also be very unpredictable in terms of gusts and direction and varying becoming unpredictable around obstacles. ou need to be good enough to know that when something happens that it is you or the wind or something with the model. The higher the wind the more unpredictable it gets inland. Near the coast or on a hill it is smoother.

You'll never really know if it is ok to fly. But you'll get better at judging it. Takeoff and landing are the worst times. Fly a bit higher and expect the unexpected. Don't fly for as long as you can, as you want to be able to land in a lull rather than a gust. Don't stay close to the ground. Take off and land as quickly as possible. The higher you go the smoother it gets.

Blade about 5 mph, 600, 10-12 mph. For learning. Convert them to fbl, you will gain 2-3 mph

              IMO for learning...

              A) 3-5mph
              B) 5-10mph
              C) 10-15mph

Reasonable limits IMO for flying once you are skilled....

              A) 15-20
              B) 18-25
              C) 20-30

They are capable of flying in more than those, but it's no longer anything close to fun, I've flown my 450 in winds above 25mph, but it was nothing but hard work and very risky, so add about 5-10mph to those and it's probably about the absolute limit.
Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

                Below 400 - less than 5mph
                450 - 10mph
                500 - 10-15mph
                600 - 20mph
                7-800 - upto about 30mph
