Soldering EC5 connectors on Turnigy Li-pos

Should I cut the connectors that are on the batterys off,or is it better to unsolder the battery connectors then solder on the ec5s which would probably be easier.Will the solder already on the Turnigys be compatable with what I am using which is tin/lead 60/40.

I always unsolder the existing connector and have never had a problem, Remember to only do one at a time and then get that into the EC5 so it can't short.

Yeah just unsolder the old ones. Flow fresh solder into the EC5 as well. Keep the wire short so that when in the connector, no wire is visible.

The easiest way is to just unsolder the connectors on it now, then you already have tinned wire ends. Then just melt a little solder into the EC5 and shover the wire into it and make sure it is heated through enough that the solder already on the wire melts as well and it all flows together.

With the big 5.5mm bullets on the Turnigy's it's very easy. The ones I found a major hassle are those red plastic ones, I don't know what they're called, but cutting the red casings off is a real pain.

+1 to that, They are a real pain, I tend to use side cutter's to do it but still a real pain.

Yeah use a blow torch to unsolder the old connectors, do one connector at a time to avoid shorting (take this seriously as a 6S lipo can spark and weld itself in a short)... Take your EC5 connectors, drop of flux in them, heat up with blow torch, insert wire continue heating, feed in fresh solder, make sure it's all hot and melts together, then remove heat and allow to cool.

I find it a lot easier using a hobby sized blow torch, the soldering iron just isn't powerful enough IMO and gets in the way.

+1 I do all my EC5's with a butane torch... It's way easier than a soldering iron.

again, to avoid a short, i cut down the plastic spine between the 2 connectors first with a sharp hobby knife. this allows me to separate them completely and work on one at a time. i secure one back around the battery along with the balance cable with an elastic band.

I use a Weller electric soldering iron, 75 watts, no trouble. The 40 watt iron struggles a bit with such large connectors but it will do them if necessary.

Like the others, I s[;it the connector in two, and do one terminal at a time. They are a PITA for sure.
I also have a 75W soldering gas powered iron, and a 50W electric iron.
The 50W just about copes, but it's a breeze with the 75W.

Yeah whatever you use it needs to get a lot of heat in quickly and maintain it till its all wicked together. A low wattage soldering iron will leave you frustrated for sure!

I'd still recommend a small butane blow torch though as it can put a lot of heat in quickly and more evenly spread I'd reckon... Can also use it for super fast heat shrinking too.

I use a butane soldering iron ... if i crank it up to about 3/4 power it will really get the solder flowing nicely and then just dip tinned end in to well and hold steady until solidified .... used to struggle immensely with low power cheap iron ... just doesn't do the job
