Once or twice a year my valley gets picked for some trainign excercise.
I just happened to be out today when an raf fighter screamed through. He came in knife-edged from the east bend, levelled off at about half the height of the hill opposite. It tops out at 600 feet above me..so jet was around 300 feet over my head as he shot through to knife edge his way over the valley end ridge and turn out aound the hill...

Funny, I saw two apaches go over Newcastle City Centre today. Was just going out for my lunch and heard them. Just assumed it was the usual police chopper. It was a nice surprise.

That must have been a wonderful display. I live near a light aircraft aerodrome but rarely see any jets.

puts a fighting proud spirit in you when you see that.
pity we seem to neglect our boys abroad.
not really our fault. it is because they give lives for "conflict" rather than a recognised war and govt play it down.

My dad was in the RAF.. came over and joined the czech free forces during W2 and stayed joined up. He died before the velvet revolution but I accompanied my Mother to a remmeberance service and flying display in those soldiers memory in the erly 90's. The coolest thing was that it was a small military field with a very low budget - about 100 guests. the rickety stand was s close to the runway that the paratroop display landed close enough to reach out and touch. When they flew the sequestered Mig29 and it storm climbed on afterburners straight off the deck it scorched the grass not far from us (think someone misjudged that a tad...)

I was soo trying to blag a ride... and they did ask on my behalf. Sadly I'm just too tall to fit any standard suit or even squeeze in safely... or that was the excuse.

My biggest regret is that in the next field were dozens of abandoned Russian tanks. I jokingly asked if I could have one and was told that if i could get one started and afford the fuel then help myself. Stupidly I never thought about hiring transport for one and figured I'd keep getting stopped driving it back to the UK and trying to get it on the ferry...that would just have been so cool parked in the drive.

I was just remembering..it was 1990. Things over there were still shaking out after the revolution: a different world. I took my cousins out for a night on the booze.. 23 litres of finest czech pivo later the rich english cousin paid the £3.50 bill....
If I did take any photos they'll still be on celluloid..somewhere. I haven't seen our boxes of photos for years..

No. During W2 mostly flying coastal command on-board Nav or Radio - even had his book published ( he did write some other stuff too but never a major known author)
