  • Progress! :)

So, many of you may remember that up until a couple of months ago, I was too scared to turn my Gaui X5 on. Since then, including today, I've had 4 flying sessions with it (4 batteries each session, except for today, where I had three and a little bit - I'll ask about the problem behind that at the end).

The first session, I was nervously hovering in all four upright orientations and tried a lazy 8 (couple of months ago). The second session (about 6 weeks ago), I was still petrified of the thing, but tried a few figure 8's and a few circuits, the third session (4 or 5 weeks ago), I managed figure-8's and circuits in both directions a little more comfortably. Then came the bad weather, until today.

Today, I thought I'd take my 130X with me as well and fly that around a bit first. With the 130X I decided to try a couple of stall turns, and then a loop or two, then tried some tick tocks, but the 130X doesn't tick tock like big heli's do in Phoenix, so I ended up putting it into the ground tail first - no damage though! Then I picked up the Gaui X5, I said to my wife (she came to the club with me so that I wasn't there alone) that I wouldn't try anything on the Gaui since I didn't want to crash it, but asked her to film it anyway... then something snapped in my head at take off, and this is the result.... (the video is poor quality since my wife didn't want to get closer with the camera, because she didn't want to wreck her suede boots clambering over the snow and a muddy field - fair enough - so I'll put comments about what is happening below in case it is unclear):

00:00 - I'm going to fly this nice and gently since I don't want to wreck it
00:05 - But things went so well on the 130X and stall turns are so easy in Phoenix
00:15 - Ah man, I'm going to try a stall turn
00:20 - That went well... what about a loop
00:27 - I could finish things off in this direction with another stall turn
00:31 - The wife realises that she can't see the X5 on the screen because she is too far away (and apparently paused recording for a few seconds)
    00:35 - Let's try another loop
    00:50 - Another stall turn
    01:09 - A roll
-- Mess around of a few seconds to calm down --
    01:45 - That's enough calming down, let's try a flip
    02:00 - How about a stationary roll
02:10 - Hmmm that was a bit messy, lets do another three stall turns and a kind of stalled loop for good measure
02:52 - Flying this X5 is fun I'll try inverting it just like I did my Nano CPX on Thursday night
03:00 - Ok, I'm a bit nervous, think I'll flip it back now... that's enough fun for one day.
03:44 - Time for a throttle hold landing

Ok, so it wasn't the best flying in the world, but it was the best flying fun I've ever had! I really like the Gaui X5 and have just caved in to Fast Lad's offer on a VX1, so I wonder if I'll be able to tell the difference between the BeastX and VX1??? I guess I didn't really try anything that will push the BeastX, so I'm thinking the answer is most likely going to be "No", but hey, at least I'll be able to do piro's really fast.

Now onto the reason for the three and a bit batteries... when I started flying on the second battery the head speed suddenly dropped about 20% 15 seconds into the flight and dropped a further 5% or so over the next 20 seconds, If I did a pitch pump, after a delay of a few seconds, the head speed would suddenly go back to 100% causing a minor blow-out (5 degrees or so), then a few seconds later the head speed would start dropping again to about 75% over a period of 5 seconds. Deciding it might be the battery, I landed it, swapped the battery out with another, and then it was fine. The thing is, I'm not convinced it is the battery. Any ideas what could be happening?

That's pretty impressive for someone who has had 4 flying sessions. I am nowhere that after 18 months!

Tip, Don't put a x5 on a stupid rate of pyro's. It always seems to end in a auto when I see one do it..

            Mentioning no names..

              Thanks - it's a shame it isn't a bit closer.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to see, when I start doing piro flips next week I'll get someone to do a close up.

I've had a fair amount of practice on Phoenix though, and been to an indoor club with the 130X and Nano CPX a number of times in the last few months. I have learnt an awful lot with those two helicopters

Yeah, I don't know what happened today, the normal inhibition I get through fear, disappeared - it'll probably be back next week and I'll be back to hovering. Lol

Nice flying there, always fun hooning around
I spent an hour this evening doing something on Phoenix that is really boring and I find really difficult....
Just flying a simple circuit or eight, at constant height and constant speed, taking maybe ten seconds for a circuit, slow & steady & smooth. No steep banking, no fast turns, just steady and smooth...
Blooming heck it is really difficult!!
                          Trev
Lots of different things that fly

And happy to have FOUR shiny EGS

Dont think a pirouetting crash on throttle hold quite counts as an auto .

That was my X5. I have crashed it twice both times trying 'blur piro' mode on the SK720.

The first time it was spinning so fast that the tail servo lead came out.

Then being the idiot I am I get it all fixed up and on the 3rd battery try it again (glued in wires ofc) and this time the force the the stop must have put on the tail was enough to twist the whole tail unit 90 degrees so the tail rotors were facing upwards you can guess how that ended .

If you dont already have the new tail unit on yours then I would pin the tail at the back as it is only clamped on with 1 screw!
