      well you said it yourself: promote in every way and do not restrict yourself to just one channel - can I sign up for the comp in any other way other than facebook? no, as its about pretending to like something (to gain visibility to a larger audiences). Usually after such comps, people unlike, unfriend their "contact" as they dont want to get all the marketing that will follow ...

      speaking about effectiveness - a single signup page with Name and email has always been more efficient if you ask me ...

      I think the reason why Mark and many other people avoid it is related to the things most regular "users" dont see/understand - if you would investigate in depth what facebook does analyse, how the underlying marketing works and how that data IS and CAN be used elsewhere you probably would question it yourself.

      A simple example: do some digging how many people dont get into job interviews due to other people sharing about "their" (not the applicants) personal lifes ...
