  • Why did several EC5 connectors crack after soldering!!!

    Hi Guys
Just changed all my kit to EC5 connectors I did on some fit the plastic plugs when solder was still hot but with me bulk soldering I fitted lots cold just noticed several had cracked is it something I did or did my local hobby shop sell me cheap ones !!!

I see this on some of mine as well - surely because all afre not of the same build quality - also any excess solder on the outside does have an impact - though predominantly I blame the quality ... I have some "eflite?" ones that dont show this however other cheaper ones did ... it may have multiple causes ...

do yourself a favour, buy genuine ec5's. i have every type of ec5 here from HK/GC/ebay and e-flite, there is a vast difference in quality and how they fit. all i done was waste money on the cheaper ones to eventually spend out for the pukka ones.

        cheers

Just out of interest, who actually has the original proper EC5s? Surely not Eflite?

Yeah, what are the original proper ones? I got mine off ebay, they seem fine but it's hit and miss. Some seem to be the bird cage type male which I like, others the kind of cross-cut slightly smaller OD tube male type, which I don't like!

I've ordered two lots of 12. One lot was the nice type the other type bought a few months later were different. Not so much of a problem as the males go on the esc so only need like 5 pairs between all my stuff, the other ones went on a charge cable.

The thing I don't like about the E-Flite version (as I know them), is that the plastic bit is put on before you solder. So if you forget to put it on before soldering you have to take them off again. Done that before!

I got mine on Ebay as well and only one has cracked but I seriously abused them because I let some solder run over the side and had to pound it into the plastic casing with a lot of force on a few of them so it's no wonder really. As it happens the cracked one I am going to change anyway because it's on the ESC and I forgot to make it a series harness.

I put my eflite plug on after I solder the wires. With the heat in the connector from soldering they push in quite easily and snug when cooled.

                  Cheers

I have never purchased or seen any EC5 where you put the housing on the wire first. Looking at the pin or socket they are shaped to be pushed in from the back of the housing.

E-Flite EC5 from FL amongst others. Type EFLAEC5 into the search box for EFLAEC501, EFLAEC502 and EFLAEC503

I've had people bring them to me for soldering their gear a few times. All ebay jobbies. Apparently abelled as 'Eflite' style. They had to have the plastic over the wire first as they clipped in from the front rather than the back. Pain in the ass the first time as I soldered them on first.

They are the fake ones or non eflite brand, eflite ec5 fit the housing after soldering others need to slip it on before solderi g , i did hate that especaily when you forget but actaully no think there slightly better as the plastic housing is slightly longer on non eflite so the wires are covered not poking out like eflite so less chance of the joint gettig stressed from use

Yeah. I figured as much. I only buy the HK ones anyway, they're the best I've used and a good price.

FL sell some Quantum version of EC5 which are like this, I have some and seem pretty good quality but are not cheap either
