  • Always throttle hold at startup? when walking with heli

quess this is the most safe way for my nitro:

start the engine and then push throttle hold
then you can walk safe with the transmitter and heli into the field

then when you take position you switch off 'hold' and start running up the engine

In the past i have never done it like this because i hadnt programmed 'hold'

    evryone doing this?
is it different for electro helis?

    cheers

Absolutely. I do this every time. I also used to do this when I flyed electric helis too.
It saves you getting the leg bashed off you if anything happens to knock the throttle stick up.

I'm in throttle hold before I even plug in the batteries or start the engine. Good practice to prevent hot starts

+1 - Throttle hold stays on until i'm ready to spool up and fly, by which time I'm a good 20ft? away from it.

Nah, i know its good practice to use hold as you say but i dont bother, sometimes the throttle needs a quick blip as your walking down to stop it cutting. Nothing more annoying than getting to the strip and the engine quits!

Ok got to admit I don't. In the habit of carrying tx in left hand holding with my thumb locked over gimble with stick down. My nitro hold has higher tickover so makes sense to me.

I don't carry the bigger helis armed even with TH. I connect the packs at the take off point now.

+1 on Nitro but our club has a policy that NO electrics to be armed in the pit area, there are wooden tables by the flying pitches to use to connect up packs and arm controller. It makes sense when you consider that you're putting a lot of faith in the transmitter keeping TH active whilst you walk out with an electric plus if a speed controller decides to cook itself then you're well away from the pits with a burning heli.

This is one of the first safety tips I show to new students,
once you get in the habbit of doing this it feels unsafe if you don't,,

                            pre-flight check & fuel
                            tx on
                            rx on
note if i'm using 35mhz i still used the peg board and ask if anyone else is on the channel before i turn on (old safe habbits)
                            pre-flight control check
                            hold on
                            gyro gain to rate mode
                            start
                            walk out to patch
wiggle the sticks to double check
                            into hh on the gyro
                            check its safe to fly
                            throttle hold off and fly

and yes i do have the walk of shame when the engine cuts with lots of p taking
