Definitely on the sim. I struggled for a while before putting in sim time

On the sim, but when I started I thought about sticks apart or sticks together. You will see what I mean once you have a go !!!
        Cheers,

I'm with Don, sim and when you take it to the field height. Learn forwards circuits first before attempting backwards, it can be a confusing orientation. You could try to learn with just remembering stick input, left turn sticks out right turn sticks together.

As Don say's best to start on the sim, i am also learning to fly backwards. when i'm learning a new move i always make sure i have 100% nailed it on the sim first before trying it for real, a few mistakes high!
You might find this video usefull:

Learning 3D Chapter 1: The Basics! « SmackTalk RC

Its learning 3D, the basics chapter one and Bert shows you the basics of flying backwards and inverted etc.
The Smacktalk series is excellent they are cheaper to buy than a heli magazine and a lot more useful.

If you're confident with hovering in all four orientations and doing circuits and figure of 8s, then start by hovering side on, ease back on the elevator until your travelling backwards, stop the heli after you have travelled some distance, rotate the tail 180 and come backwards past you. Control the speed and keep the heli tracking straight and smooth. Learn the corrections on the ailerons and elevator before you progress on to banking turns. It will seem unusual at first when doing banked turns, as you push your aileron and rudder sticks opposite to each other when flying backwards.

Im sure there plenty of different methods but thats how I did it.

The way I learn't to fly backwards (from right to left) is a bit of a joke, it was when I was trying to learn to lazy eights...
I could turn the heli side on fly forward to the right do a 180 turn fly past myself to the left then stop!! I could not make the right turn on my left..
For some reason my brain would not tell my left thumb to turn the rudder right,,
So I would fly backwards so the heli was in front of me (still side on) then take another run up to try the right turn again...
I always remember when flying backwards,, "stick up, tail up ~ stick down, tail down"
                  hope this helps
