  • Voltage advice needed!

    Hi All,

Just looking at FBL unit options for my Goblin 500. Was researching the Spartan VX1, and came across this statement ...
"Power - The Vortex VX1 operates at both classic 5V and high voltage 8.4V (2S) power systems. The DataPod port of the Vortex VX1 also doubles as secondary power connection point when additional current is needed for high torque servos."

Now, my ESC/BEC is the Talon 90 which can which is user-selectable to 6v or 8v output.. My Align DS515m servos spec a range of 4.8 to 6v. So, 8v is out as it'll blow my servos, but 6V on the BEC then appears to be in conflict with the 5V requirement of the VX1 ?

I'm new to all this as my first build was a super-combo. I can't find any documentation on the voltage requirements of the mini-vBar which is my other FBL option ...

    Help!

    TIA. Tom.

im sure 6v will be fine, seems they are giving you between 5v - 8.4 v

Too check whether your ok set the pitch pump too 100 full on and pump the collective fast for 1 minute then go in the log and see if there are any voltage drop messages...thats if it has not caught fire before the minutes up.....

I don't have any of this wired up yet. I'm trying to decide with FBL unit to buy and want to make sure I'm not buying an incompatible combination.

It isn't just 5V or 8.4V, just check the spec. on the website : Spartan Vortex VX1

You'll find this there : Operating voltage: 3.8V to 8.4V

Specs are a bit iffy in general. I can give an example of one that is lies, from a major well thought of manufacturer, but it seems unfair to single them out. I'd go on what other people have proved works reliably. In some cases they mean a 6V battery, meaning 5 NiCds or NiMhs, and in others they mean 6.0V absolute max.

VX1 will work fine from a flat 4 nicad pack (4V) all the way up to a fully charged 2S lipo (8.4V) and anywhere in between.

Chris is that a certain reciver thats specd at 6v max and works fine at 8.4V that emmits a continious data stream in addition do driving servos ???

                No. It's not a rx.

                  1) "The Vortex VX1 operates at both classic 5V and high voltage 8.4V (2S) power systems."

                  2) "Operating voltage: 3.8V to 8.4V"

Number (1) is marketing. A rough as a compatibility guide. Number (2) is confirmed and guaranteed operating specification. So, yes it will work with any voltage between 3.8V and 8.4V.

                  Cheers,
                  Angelos
