  • Now I REALLY hate the snow

    Take care where you land!!!

Decided to have my first ever fly in the snow, so walked over some local fields nearby and took off. I'm just starting do do my first ever circuits and all was going well until I got nose in so I thought I would slowly pirouette to tail in, in doing so I got a bit too low. I thought the snow was only about 1" deep at this point so rather than panic I decided to put her down, unfortunately the snow was around 6" deep as there was apparently a dip in the field covered by the snow, and I did put it down a bit heavier than I would choose normally, but the snow grabbed the tail, tilted the bird over and the rest is history.

My first proper crash (Don't like doing this, so will endeavour not to do it again )

    B*LLOC*S!

Just started stipping down to see what I broke. Is there anything you guys suggest I really should check that may not be obvious?

Keep your chin up, it's all part of the learning process. The fear of crashing a larger heli should be gone now, get it fixed and get back out in the snow

Never mind Paul,it's all part of the learning process.Boom strikes always look bad.
just do the TT gears front and rear new boom and drive shaft.
Have a look at your maingear just to make sure no teeth where stripped
And if your on circuits already your a fast learner so well done, that nose in lark still gets me lost.

These things happen to all of us, make sure all your shafts are straight (Tail, main, feathering) and that your bearings are still smooth and you have no gear teeth missing then get it fixed up and get back out there, it's all part of the fun

As somebody else pointed out - feathering shaft - especially as it looks like a fairly solid boom strike you had there ...

Chin up! I had my first major 500 crash a month or so ago. Now you have the experience of building it, it's amazing how quickly you can repair it. On top of that, I found that putting things together for the second time, I did a better job!

Bit of advice - don't chuck anything in the bin until you've rebuilt it all. It's sods law that you'll chuck something, then find you're missing that one small screw that went with the bust part!

Thanks for the support guys, couple of quick questions,

                            1) The tail servo (DS655) had the ball link snapped out of the servo horn in the prang. If I rotate the servo by hand it feels fine, but when powered up and you hold the body, it feels really rough as it goes through the movement as applied from the Tx. Does this mean a new servo or are the gears servicable
                            2) Re the feathering shaft, I have removed the down link pitch arms and rotated the grips, it seems fine with no play in the dampeners, should I strip and roll the shaft on glass?
                            3) Should I replace the Jesus bolts as a matter of course?
                            4) Once I removed the tail/blades etc, I spun up the motor, it seems ok except for a real buzz vibration at a particular head speed (around 45% stick). This is not evident either side of this very narrow sounding RPM. Do I need to investigate this.

I'll post a list of the broken bits, but so far:

                            Main Blades
                            Tail Blades
                            TT front gears
                            Boom
                            TTube
                            Boom stays
                            Tail rotor shaft (at least!)

                            Thanks again
                            Paul
