  • 50 size heli costs

    hi everyone

I'm thinking of building a 50 size 'crasher' model ( by crasher I mean a model that I wouldn't worry too much about when I stack it) Has anyone done a cost comparison of models in this range. My gut feeling is a trex 600 but I quite fancy a vibe 50.

    Thanks

Anything 600 size is going to cost you a pretty penny when you crash it. Sure not 700 money, but a massive step up from your 450.

Difficult to give you an 'average' crash cost, but they definitely go in a lot harder than a 450 or 500.

Easiest thing to do buy a second hand airframe, crash it, buy another then move your gear over.

i would go with align most crash parts come in a pack of two i.e main shaft & feathering spindle keeps the cost down and you 1st crash pays in part for the second.

Vibe 50 is a lovely heli, but obsolete nowadays. Parts are expensive and rare as hen's teeth.

I still have and fly my original Vibe 50 from when they first came out, and have never crashed it. But, I also have a complete spare airframe just as a spare.

If you want a hack model, then you can't really go far wrong with a TRex 600. Just accept it for what it is. TT X50 would also be a very good choice.

Most expensive "proper" crash (rather than a very hard landing and a broken skid) I have had on a Trex600 was circa £450, cheapest say £100

The crash costs are going to depend a lot on what blades you use because they are often the first fatality regardless of the airframe.

Helicopter pilots get it up quicker.

When the blue light is flashing I am kidding.

Why simplify when it is so much simpler to complicate.

Like Trillian says the blades can be a big expense when it comes to crash repairs.
The last time i crashed my 50 was when the rx browned out, the heli hit the deck and landed on its side.
Luckily it went into fail safe so the damage was minimal, i got away with a few chips on the blades, broken landing skids, had to replace the shafts and and just a small dent in the boom!
So the crash costs depend on the how it goes in i suppose. for instance, on Friday i did a mini auto with my 450 whilst in idle up, when it had landed i flicked throttle hold off but it was still in idle up (100% throttle) as it was on concrete, it spun around and flipped all over the place wrecking most parts on the head, all shafts, blades, boom and some of the cyclic servos! Expensive lesson, i now know the advantage of having a soft start!!!!

My cheapest 600efl crash was around £70 inc £50 for blade ... most expensive oddly enough was a non powered crash around £180.
