  • Upgrade kit Raptor 30 to 50 Continued

I got the pinion off the clutch bell. It was fairly tight so I used pliers on the pinion. You can see threadlock has been used but I won't be using it. Also the new thread created some aluminium swarf which I cleared away with compressed air.

Next step was pop a few ball links, remove the Jesus bolt and pull off the head with the mainshaft attached. The new main gear comes with shorter bolts as the tail drive wheel is not attached to it.

I used threadlock on the allen bolts which I put on from above so as not to get any on the plastic main gear.

Here we are all ready to go except spot the deliberate mistake! I didn't until I tried to put the gear wheel back. Answers on a postcard to deliberatemistake.com.

I'm not too sure I like the way the tail drive wheel uses the Jesus bolt but then it made the fitting of God's nut easier. I left the Jesus bolt in place until I had the mainshaft back in and resting on it so all I had to do was retract the bolt at the last minute and everything was lined up. See how the nut is held. It's a doddle of a job so if you want a driven tail go for it.

Finally I replaced the clutch assembly. I sprayed some white grease on to my finger and ran it over the starter shaft before inserting the shaft into the breaings and put a touch of TriFlow on the three bearings themselves. To make it easier to put the grub screws back on the starter hex coupling I bored a 4.5mm hole adjacent to it through the pitch arm. The allen key with the grubby (x2) goes straight through and that enabled me to get the coupler set with no vertical play.

As far as the most important parts that are required to go to 50 that's it. As soon as the engine is here I'll fit it and see what we have.

I just had one concern. The Jesus bolt's nut is a captive nut so once used it isn't gripping like a new one so I put some threadlock in there as an added precaution but I know what it can do to plastics so it might make the nut less grippy!!.
Helicopter pilots get it up quicker.

When the blue light is flashing I am kidding.

Why simplify when it is so much simpler to complicate.

It is usually a nyloc nut, *never* use threadlock on those, just replace with a new nut.

      Thanks.

I'll see how it is in a few months. As it is, I am likely to be revisiting this anyway so a new nut now is not a priority.

I've had Jesus bolts with ordinary nuts on lots of times in the past and just used threadlock.

The nut on a Raptor is not 'captive' from memory, it can get pulled in there pretty tight, but it does come out unless my memory is faulty.

Ordinary nut and threadlock is just fine, that wouldn't bother me, it was the thought of adding threadlock to a nyloc nut that had me concerned.

          Helijohn,
What do you think would be the result of using a 10T pinion and 85T main gear from a 50, instead of the 86T in my 30 with the TT39 engine?

            Dan.

Dan I have no real idea M8 TBH. I used that combo as I intend to use a 50 engine and I am only doing that cos I have a lemon to fix which seems gruntless even with an OS37 or a TT39. I have a TT39 Rappy 30 which flies like a pocket rocket and has set the bar for me to do even better with "lemon". I am working on the principle that a big engine must do something even if it is weedy in terms of power when you consider the power to weight ratio.

Sheryl (trillian) did mention headspeeds somewhere and best torque range so I am guessing your combo would be failing to reach it's best available power band.
