Cml sell great stuff called nitro power blast. Your lhs should be able to hook you up or order it online.

It removes every kind of gum/threadlock I've tried it on.

I've tried most stuff that's been mentioned to shift old threadlock residue (including nail polish remover) but nothing seems to really work so it would be nice to find something that does. What was the postage like on it as it says it is sent by courier.

I chuck all my new build screws in a jar give it a good shake and leave them overnight. Chuck whats left away. If there is too much threadlock on a bolt and you haven't got a new one, use a pen type blow torch and gently heat the bolt, this will flake the old stuff off. Don't heat it red though, just a gentle heat and then rub it off with a tea towel.
Strewth that's a lot but a great price!!

For simple degreasing I have always used paraffin.

I buy chemicals at mistralni.co.uk - lots of interesting stuff but also "mundane" silicone oli and IPA.

Thats exactly what I was thinking lol.

I use Acetone but have used enamel thinners and cellulose thinners. Also brake cleaning fluid would work and meths which can be had at B&Q and the like these days in the painting aisle.

                I love IPA too..
I've ordered 500ml of Isopropyl Alcahol from the bay £5.99 delivered.
My local chemist (Lloyds) could get it in for the same day but it was £12 for 500ml.
                Thanks for all the advice!

I realise this is too late but I use RC Nitro Cleaner spray, its basically the equivalent to Isopropyl Alcohol in a spray can.
This is what all the RC Car guys use, its safe on all plastics & very convientent in spray can form.
This is the one I have at the moment:-
Nitro Cleaner Aerosol 500ml # H1030 from Schumacher RC Racing.

But most Model shop will have a brand of RC Nitro Cleaner spray.

One word of warning though is that this or any alcohol soaked on say a Kitchen roll is quite flamable!
