  • Heli drag racing

It's rare that I post about my flying, but this afternoon was just one of those days that I really enjoyed and thought I'd share!

For starters, today was the first day that I flew my 500EFL naturally, and without fear - it flew beautifully. Justin (sharpedge) had a whizz on it, and I'll admit, my heart was in my mouth as I watched him throw it around the sky, flipping it, doing tail slides etc. Today, flying it felt natural. It didn't feel too intimidating and whilst I personally didn't invert it, I did some nice big circuits and figure 8's with nice banked turns.

Flying my 450X afterwards was just a dream. I bought the Trex500 to make the 450x feel smaller to me - and it's worked. I flew the 450x like I fly my 130x - with confidence and absolutely loved it. Despite the fact I'd never inverted my 450x before, I did it today without batting an eyelid. It was almost easy! The BeastX unit just keeps that bird planted in the sky.

So, why is the title of this post "drag racing"? Well, myself and Justin in a moment of madness decided to try a drag race between my 130X and his Trex 250DFC - top idea!

Neither of us had ever tried this before, so we both had a practice go from a hover to giving it front elevator and buckets of collective - then went for it. Amazingly, the 130X (probably because it's lighter) kept up! Or maybe both pilots were the limiting factor! Anyways - it was a hoot, so we decided to go for round two! Justin brought his back to the start line and I followed. Trouble is, for a moment, I looked over to see where his 250 was ... then looked back for my 130x - couldn't see it! A moment later and I spotted it! - coming at a rate of knots towards me! It hit my right hand in idle up then hit the deck (stripping a C gear in the process).

I can tell you this... It may be small, but it packs a punch! My hand still hurts a bit!

Moral of this story - keep your eyes on the heli!
