  • removing gov magnets (metal fan)

I have to swap a magnet as its not being picked up by the sensor. Are there any tricks to getting the govener magnets out of a metal fan? (trex 600n with align metal fan) can a magnet be drilled ? Should I try and grind it out? This looks like it could be a touch tricky! How is this one done please.....
    thanks in advance

drill a small hole behind the magnet, and push it out from behind, this will also help when you glue a new magnet in as it gives the excess glue somewhere to go

Drill small hole from the back and push it out. Could try a bit of heat first, you never know it may come out without having to drill.

thanks chaps, but its right on the back of one of the fins which makes this a little tricky....i wont be able to drill centraly behind the magnet. it will be a tiny hole right to one side of the magnet.
Also, how critical is the fan balance, will this put it out of balance and cause vibes.....? will I have to drill a hole the same size on the opposite magnet to keep the fan in balance....?

It will be such a tiny hole it won't make any difference.

If you used Epoxy to fit it just put the fan in the oven and it should fall out.

From now on I will be drilling a small hole behind the magnets on my fans as this will help the magnets seat better and not float on the glue...it will also make it easier to get them out should I need too...

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I assume that I dont need to replace both magnets with new ones, just one, as one acts as a balance weight to the other (so long as i get the correct polarity upwards to cut the light on the govener with one magnet)
The old magnets appear to have absolutely no strength in them at all, unlike the new ones which are quite powerful. I didnt realise that it was possible for a magnet to loose all of its magnetism. just out of interest, how long is it likely to be before they need replacing again? (my heli is 2nd hand so i have no idea how long they have been installed)

As i didnt stick them in I dont know what they were stuck in with. I could just pop it in the oven anyway to see if the pop out

I think they lose there magnetic strength when they get hot.....

Possibley epoxy a stick to the magnet and pull, make sure the stick and pulling action are at 90 degrees to get maximum force.

thanks folks. heat from a pen torch to burn the glue, and then a small hole from the back and they are out.

If you use heat on them they will loose their magnatism so its probably best to replace them. I recently had the same problem, I used a small heat gun to get mine out (as I did'nt drill a small hole before fitting them) and found that when I put them together they did not snap together as they did before.

                        Cheers
