  • Air Cadets - Wow.

As some of you might know I organised an hour talk with one particular Air Cadet squadron locally with the idea of promoting the hobby into a group of teenagers who had never seen a model helicopter.

It started with an hour classroom session going through the basics of the helicopters (we took a Trex 600 & 700 with us) some phoenix demo's on the big screen and safety procedures etc. Towards the end of the session we got a couple of them flying phoenix, much to the amusement of their fellow cadets and chose some hard 3D and F3C excerts from some popular videos to show them. The videos frightened a few off but 16 cadets, both girls and boys, showed interest and wanted to have a go at the real thing.

Over the last two Sundays we took them to the field where they flew the real thing buddied up with professional tutor Mark Bateman. We have one more week to do next Sunday and I'm really looking forward to it.

Now for those of you who think a whole bunch of streetwise teenagers loose in a field is not a good idea then think again. It has been a pleasure to have them at the School, they are all perfectly behaved, exceptionally polite and attentive and by golly I think we've found a couple of natural pilots in the mix. Now I don't know if this is influenced by the fact they've all chosen to join the cadets or are just naturally pleasant people interested in flying but I'm more than impressed.

I'd just like to thank a couple of people for making this possible.

Firstly Mark Bateman from Model Flight Training who has pulled out the stops and given hours of his time freely.
And Secondly Stuart (RCHA) for his support and backing the project from the start.

    Thanks Guys.

Well done Mark. On a much smaller scale I've been asked to give a talk to a local scout group. I was going to take the 700 along as a static model and maybe my 250 or a 120SR to hover. Hadn't thought about Phoenix - I think that's the best idea and can imagine a similar level of enthusiasm.

Would have loved to do some indoor there but H & S wouldn't allow it.

      Good luck with the scouts

So good to see this. I wasn't properly in the hobby when I was in the ATC, but it would have been great to get involved then

It would be great to see the hobby become more integrated into the ATC. I always wanted to become involved when I was a cadet but never had the funds and there wasn't any real knowledge of the hobby within the ATC.

Unfortunately health and safety zealots can sometimes be a problem with the ATC, as with any other youth organisation. I and several others from my local flying club have tried to organise trial flights in microlights for the local squadron (which I was once a member of) but we never got much of a response from the ATC staff, they always cited health and safety. Real shame because it would be great for the cadets and the local scouts always enjoy it.

          Cheers

          Mark

Kind of glad my ACF unit hasnt heard of health and safety. As a army cadet at a Army air corps reg i'd like to have this hobby more evolved as the army air corps only fly's heli's too!

But with the SM standing behind then i don't think they would dare to be anything less than polite

When you can't get *air cadets* into planes because of "health and safety", you know something's gone wrong somewhere. What do they think they are there for, painting classes? (I was going to say needlework but ooh! sharp needles!)

I suspect that it's partly laziness on the part of certain staff members and that they just can't be bothered with the hassle of getting approval or whatever is required. When I was with the squadron we often had to do activities off the books, as a group of friends, in order to avoid the headaches.
