As some of you might know I organised an hour talk with one particular Air Cadet squadron locally with the idea of promoting the hobby into a group of teenagers who had never seen a model helicopter.
It started with an hour classroom session going through the basics of the helicopters (we took a Trex 600 & 700 with us) some phoenix demo's on the big screen and safety procedures etc. Towards the end of the session we got a couple of them flying phoenix, much to the amusement of their fellow cadets and chose some hard 3D and F3C excerts from some popular videos to show them. The videos frightened a few off but 16 cadets, both girls and boys, showed interest and wanted to have a go at the real thing.
Over the last two Sundays we took them to the field where they flew the real thing buddied up with professional tutor Mark Bateman. We have one more week to do next Sunday and I'm really looking forward to it.
Now for those of you who think a whole bunch of streetwise teenagers loose in a field is not a good idea then think again. It has been a pleasure to have them at the School, they are all perfectly behaved, exceptionally polite and attentive and by golly I think we've found a couple of natural pilots in the mix. Now I don't know if this is influenced by the fact they've all chosen to join the cadets or are just naturally pleasant people interested in flying but I'm more than impressed.
I'd just like to thank a couple of people for making this possible.
Firstly Mark Bateman from Model Flight Training who has pulled out the stops and given hours of his time freely.
And Secondly Stuart (RCHA) for his support and backing the project from the start.
Thanks Guys.
