Nothing is as intimidating as a 700 electric, they just sound an look evil . Only thing that is worrying about nitro is hot starts and the fact you never know when they might cut out.

What??? When did I say THAT! Surely this is just a psychological thing? I don't keep my electric close. I just happen to keep a nitro further away than would be usual. What's hard to understand?

JHC! They both gonna hurt BIG TIME if they hit you. I know that!!!

I got through my fear last weekend after 5 or 6 flights with my new 600le. The bigger size makes visability far easier, so pushing it further away is no real issue. The extra stability is reasuring and the noise and smoke are all part of the fun and not to be scared of. Having witnessed several electric near misses/crashes recently (because of lipo/motor problems) i dont think its any more likely to come down than an electric, but it is harder to get over the "possible engine cutting" fear, but the buz you get far outweighs this little worry. your 450 was probably quite intimidating when you started, but you soon get over it. stick at it with the nitro I say.

Strange how different we all are.
I find my 600n less intimidating than my 6hv! I think the noise of the ic engine gives me more info about the heli response etc in the air.

Oh yeah, the 450 was scary as hell when I first got it. It looked massive. After I'd been used to it for a while I got the 500. Next time I took the 450 out I thought the little mite looked positively tiny.

Went up FoG at the weekend and Andy and Mark were there and a heli was sat there and I asked if it was a 250, LOL! It was a 450 but for some reason, to me, it seemed really, really small. Got my 450 out and they were the same size. You really can get used to size.

That Raptor 90 at the lesson didn't seem all that big either. Maybe it's because I'm more confident with them now.

There's a comment about size begging to be made here....but I'll resist

Yeah it was a sarcastic reply, but I meant it purely in jest, and my original statement didn't portray that well, so I added to it. I agree with you entirely, but they all make nervous up close.

I am more fearful of electric than nitro - I never know what it's going to do when I start an electric despite all the inbuilt safety. A nitro engine itself won't hurt you - you might get the odd burnt finger though.

I started with 30 size and so I find 450 and smaller to be tiny. Surely it is all proportional as to how far away you want to stand - what's wrong with twice the size and twice the distance? Mind you, having said that I do get in a little too close when I am first spooling up just in case I need to mess with the needle.

And I find flybar paddles way more dangerous than blades.

Some of the electric headspeeds are way more frightening.

Big, combustion engined and powerful - gorgeous! It'll be a long time before I get into an electric 4x4 I can tell you!

I have an electric chainsaw and believe me it is more worrying than a petrol one. How can you call glowers critters, shame on you - they are truly gorgeous. You won't be wanting to learn to fly full size helis then as they are not electric and are very big. They shake like buggery and are noisy to hell but there is no nicer feeling than lifting off in one. I would hate to have learned in an electric one - talk about worrying if the battery would last.

Maybe you would like the little 20 size nitro? I'll be getting a Gaui NX4 ASAP which is smaller than 30 but it's as small as I want to go for "proper" flying.
I just wish you had started with a glower.

                      Sums it up almost completely.

You guys, stop pulling my leg Remember, I take sarcasm as literal (I am literal minded ). LOL!

I bet I would have liked the nitros I flew if they'd been FBL. Actually, I did like the 90, it had a slowish sort of throaty purr to it that I found quite attractive. It really didn't sound threatening at all, but the little 30, 30 peeved wasps in a jar and, you know, I hate wasps with a passion.

I think if I went up beyond, say, 550, I'd go nitro. My first experience of glow engines would probably be from 40 years ago. I find them unreliable and a pain to start and keep running (these would be the little peewee type engine). I did have a big one at one time and it was much better at starting.

I'm guessing that 40 years on they are more accurate and relieable and start easily (the ones I played with last weekend certainly were).

                              Yet the 90 is ginormous!!

Glow engines can be unreliable now - I have had some real dogs. I find getting them right is the key then they'll go on for ages with just a few plug changes and a bit of adjustment for the cold or hot weather.

I am going to make you a nitro head yet!!

Sometimes on the sim I can't see the heli but can still hear the engine; dunno if that is true of electric.

Most milk floats I know of can't be heard over the clanking of the bottles of milk at any distance.

Funny you say that, I ballsed up an auto with my 90 electric because I was listening to the blades as it decended and then a really noisy motorbike passed and I couldn't hear it anymore :-( so I messed up the flare.
