  • DX8 rebooted while inverted flight with Raptor G4

So there I was on my second flight of the day, main fuel tank almost empty and practicing some inverted flying, while all of the sudden I notice the engine cutting out, and my radio starts beeping. At the beginning I thought that I pushed it a bit too far and ran out of fuel, but then I realized that the raptor wasn't responding to any stick input. By the time I understood what was happening, the heli was already down.

Now, this is the incredible bit: I broke a link, that's all. Canopy is fine. Tail is fine. Frames are fine. Heck, even the blades are fine (one has a small mark from the blade holder, but I think it's reusable).

It turns out that the heli auto'ed down inverted very softly into bushes that acted as a cushion. I still can't believe it. Also, the G4 is built like a tank I'm still disassembling the head completely, wouldn't be surprised if the main or feathering shafts are bent. Still, pretty good result for a crash with a heli of this size...

As for the DX8, I don't know what to think. I guess it could be my fault, later I noticed that the on/off switch doesn't slide completely to the 'on' side, so it might be a bad connection or something. I have to investigate more.

I think you might have answered your own question with the switch wasn't fully over and your moving the sticks about there is I suppose a small chance it might ket touched by your hand or just move out of contact for a milli sec.

Bummer - you could try from testing on ground with the slider just on the contact shake your tx and see if it cycles...dunno it bit hard to recreate the vbar will have a log file but I'm not sure if the TX keeps on on the DX8...not sure if any TX's are that open for people to read data unless you send it to HH for them to have a look at.

On the positive note as you say your heli's in near flyable condition could have been much worse though the G4 is would a doubt a very robust crasher I can vouch for this...lol

I also think it might be a temperature issue. On the field, the slider almost wouldn't "click" on the "on" position, but I've been trying to recreate it at home and I can't, there's a very noticeable click when I switch it on and it's very difficult to put it on a middle position where it would be easy to reboot the radio by touching slightly the sliders.

I also wonder if the vibrating timer alarm could have helped to move the switch. This whole thing happened near the end of my flight

I'm sure you will find its the timer alarm, I had exactly the same thing happen when the main vibration part of the alarm was going off it cut the TX signal completely and rebooted as the alarm stopped. Set everything up on the bench set set the timer for a short period and waggle the sticks im sure you will find there is no signal when the vibration is operating. I sent The DX8 back for repair and it was replaced. Hope you get to the bottom of this problem as I tried all sorts before tracing the problem to the alarm.

              Thanks guys,

My firmware version is 2.01, so I should upgrade probably. Anyway this has never happened to me before, and I have hundreds of flights behind this radio..

I just took away the feathering shaft and the main shaft, both are perfectly fine!

Wasn't there a recall based on the vibrating alarm? I forget the details now though.

Wow, very lucky with hardly any damage on the Raptor

Send the radio of straight away and dont even question it regardless!!! If this happened to me the tx would be straight away being back to get checked out.

If something like that were to happen again you would be gutted.

There was a 'service advisory' to check that the vibe alarm didn't cause loss of control.

In fairness, very few were affected.

I'd suggest that everyone should check for this anyway regardless of when the radio was purchased.
