  • Stoked! Buzzed! Chuffed! First proper solo logo flights!

Sorry for the pointlessness of this post, but I've got to tell somebody!

I just took my logo 500 out for my first proper solo flight since my lesson with Flyin'Fish this afternoon, and am a bit excited!

It was a bit blustery to say the least, but I figured I (and the logo) could handle it. I wasn't wrong!

First flight - 4-orientation hovers, 5 slow circuits CW and CCW, getting used to the wind effect, a few faster circuits and lazy 8s, then time to land (at the moment I don't fit so much into my flights!)

Second flight after a little break - Hover, circuits, then idle up. . . climb out to stall turn, gentle FF to stall turn, keeping pretty good line if I say so myself!, bit more power on the way out, up to big stall turn, then to 540 stall, loving the speed and height, a slightly dodgy roll (kept the neg pitch on a little too long and spiralled out slightly) followed by another 540 stall. Worked a little on bringing it back into eye-level hover in front, more circuits, then in to land. mini auto to land, with a little tiny bounce on touchdown.

Third flight - Put the 130x up for a laugh. It's so odd to fly that after the logo. Booted around by the wind, zipping up and down to keep me on my toes. Did my circuits, stalls, rolls, loops, stationary backwards flips (three in a row, during which I lost a lot of height and very nearly hit the deck on the way out - got lucky!) then had a go at something I've only tried on the sim - half piro flips! Did a few pirouettes to get a proper feel for the piro speed then went for it. Blow me down, it worked! six half flips later the timer beeped to come in to land, so I did, putting the heli down onto the little flight case landing pad to keep it off the grass (can't trust the availability of another crown gear right now after the first one failed from gentle hovering with no crashes!)

Fourth flight - Logo500 - Hovers, circuits, into FFF with stalls, more rolls on the pass through, then having fun so I worked a little vertical roll at stall point (not sure what it's called) and half piro back into FFF, then went for a loop. Damn the logo is lovely to fly. Sounds so sweet too - all that power for so little noise. It's actually pleasant to listen to. Kinda hums. Happy with the loop, so more stall turns, then went for something I haven't tried yet outside of the sim - a big loop with a half piro at the top, reverse out. It went well! A bit of direction correction, 180 stall turned from backwards flight, to backwards flight, reverse entry loop with 180 piro at top. I have to say, at the top I had a moment of panic as I was inverted flying backwards and lost nearly all my travel speed, but I soon realised that in fact I knew where I was and held the inverted hover rather than panicking and trying to complete the loop. Rolled out, carried on forward flight, and around then the 1-minute-left beep went off. Brought it back to skids eye height, medium speed banked circuits, finally nice and slow into hover in front, side on, and a mini auto to finish. How stoked was I? I think I sang to myself all the way back to the car!!!

If you made it this far in my blow-by-blow account, I hope it serves to inspire other newbies like me to get out there and fly, or reminds the proper fliers out there where you've come from. . .
Well, if nothing else, this will serve as a record of my early flights, and in fact my first proper solo logo flight.

Finally, I really believe this wouldn't have been possible so quickly without lessons, so get out there and book yours! Such a difference it made!

awesome dude, well done, loops with half piros at the top are things im working on at the moment, it feels a bit sketchy when you do it but so much fun!

Sounds like you have a great little load of flights

Woohoo! Another nice hour at the field today! Much the same as yesterday, with a little bit of inverted hovering thrown in. Gotta say I found myself struggling to break out of the 'half pipe' mentality - stall turn after stall turn with a few rolls/loops thrown in the middle. . .

4 more flights chalked up though, which makes it 11 flights on the logo so far. . . Got a couple of extra lipos winging their way from Midlands helis that should be arriving tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in maybe 7 flights in a session. At 7 mins a flight, that spells progression opportunities to me!!

Just need to get my head around making the most of my flights now. I'm thinking a plan pre flight may well be the way.

I'm loving my current 'semi' routine. . .

            Take off
            4 orientation hovers
            4 orientation 45 degree hovers
            Slow pirouette hover
            CW slow circular circuits
            540 degree slow pirouette
            CCW slow circular circuits
            2 lazy 8s
(slow circluar circuit figure 8, nose-in at crossing point)
            Idle up
            climb out to FFF
then play with stall turns, rolls, loops, faster banked turns/circuits, high inverted hovers etc
Occasional slow descent from FFF to eye level hover to practice my approaches

            Love it!

If you can do most of that list Matt. Why not download a list of moves for the bmfa "b" test you should not be far off that level by the look of it

I'm not quite sure how well I do them at the moment. . . Hopefully with time I'll feel a little bit more confident in the quality of my flying rather than the quantity of moves. . . Trying to take it slowly and get these basics working really nicely before I progress. I really want to nail perfect circular circuits and figure 8s. . .
But thanks for the encouragement! I'll take a look at the 'b' list and add to my 'workout plan'!

That's what I'm chasing, quality rather than quantity. If it looks ragged, then it looks horrible. If it looks smooth.... well, it is a pleasure to see. I'm sure you'll get there, your darn near there already I look forward to hearing more or seeing more video.
