  • Spartan DS 760

I have one of these on the way. I never learn with gyros cos I go for the cheap HK401's in the hope I'll get one that actually does what it says on the tin and work like a Futaba 401.

So I got a refund on my HK that I bought for my Cypher and rashly spent a few bucks on a GY 401. Now this is my favourite gyro which I use on most of my helicopters so what could go wrong?

    Answers on a postcard to bullshit@yahoo.com .

So I decided to go for a used DS760. It ought to have arrived yesterday but thanks to snail mail will probably come on Monday. No wait, nothing comes on a Monday.........make that Tuesday. So in the meantime I decided to swot up on how to install it and OMG, I wish I'd bought another Futaba 401.

I had thought of putting it into my Rappy and putting the Rappy's 401 in the Cypher. I built the Cypher mid July and am still waiting to get a decent gyro for it. I have been using an old peizo rate gyro. However, I don't know what to do.

So here's the question. Do you think the DS760 to be better than the GY401?
Helicopter pilots get it up quicker.

    YES......
The 760 is an excellent gyro. I recently switched out my last GY401 for a DS760

However always regarded the GY401 as a solid performing gyro that is excellent for beginners due to its ver simple setup.

The 760 does take a while to get used to to program but it is well worth the struggle. The process is much much easier if you have the usb connection cable and do it with a PC though.

Yes, and once you learn how to program it, you will too. not had a larger heli in a while, but I used to use the 760 all the time

Is it used while mounted on the airframe??

Thanks. Seems like it's about 30 quid to buy one.

I'd try setting up the DS760 before spending another £30 on the USB link. I set mine up on my TRex 550 in about 5 minutes. It is really easy and works well on factory settings (for me at least).

Sounds like a plan. I don't even know if it will come with a book of words but I have sorted the online manual. I wanted it for my Cypher but am considering putting it on my Raptor...................bit of a decision to make I guess.

What sort of mounting tape do they like, I've seen comments about vibes being a PITA.

Mine's on Spartan's own pads and I have no vibration issues. You can get them direct from Spartan http://www.spartanrc.com/store/products_map.php?symb=M

Note that Spartan Quarks are on offer at 50% off if you want another one.

I can setup a DS760 on the bench using the PC interface so that it just works 'bang on' in the air, with no flight adjustments needed at all. With the link cable and Spartan's software, the whole process takes about 10 minutes tops. Job done.

Using the PC interface allows you to:

                          1. Set the servo endpoints to exactly 100% each way (by adjusting the mechanical geometry of the tail linkage)
                          2. Adjust the deceleration and acceleration profiles to sensible values (70% and 100%)
                          3. Adjust the centre point of the tail servo to suit
                          4. Switch the sensing direction
                          5. Set the gyro gain to the optimum value (26%)

Set it up this way and it will hardly (if ever) need adjusting at the field. Works on all size helis.

The Spartan is really quite easy to setup even without the PC interface. I have three now and when I got the first one I did it just from the TX. The second one I actually got with a heli from Steve so it was already setup . The latest one I used the PC USB interface as I got one a while back on sale somewhere (I don't remember exactly where but this was quite a while ago).

It only seems difficult because the 401 has almost no setting up involved but the Spartan is really easy once you get going with it. Once the setup has been done I have not had to change anything, only had to fine tune the gain.

Also, I think I now have an extra USB PC interface that I'll be selling because I just bought another DS760 with the interface lead.
