  • Stupid, I know!

Does anyone else here feels intimidated by others around you when flying?

To explain better. I was at the SWRCH over the weekend. Some fantastic talented people there, showed the flying skills, it was fantastic.
But I just couldn't bring my self to fly my helis there. I been flying for a year now and I can do most of sport flying, rolls, inverts etc but no 3d.
I had a flight there on Sunday morning early, with only few people around, mostly people I know. I enjoyed, till I put my 6HV in on my second flight after some major tail wag and lost tail control. I was ok about it, and the 500 pro stayed in the van for the rest of the day.
I am kicking my self now that I dint had more flights over the weekend.

Oh well, hopefully next years SWRCH will give it a better go.

    Hey Panos,

    Hows the 6hv now??

I got a bit wobbly on my 1st few flights on sat as like you said there were many great pilots there, what i did was just shut off from them and fly as i do at my clubs.

Also remember that this hobby isn't like a lot of others, i've never seen anyone take the **** out of others abilities or look down on you, instead everyone knows how hard it is and how it felt for them. Just as well really when you see me fly.

      Panos.
this is exactly the feedback we have been waiting for,i'm sorry you felt intimidated by the more experienced pilots, our aim was to help everybody enjoy the weekend and get a feel for what its like to fly in public.I was honestly gutted when we arrived sunday morning and you had already stacked the 6hv.I'm sure we could have got you flying if that hadn't happened.Next time we will keep an eye on pilots that have registered and not flown and do our upmost to approach them and se if we can help, rather than let them battle with their nerves.
The 60 sec hover comp was the one that we hoped all would participate in and we did egg people to get there names down, believe it or not ive been on here since 2007 and that was my first public flight ever!about 15 seconds in i realized i was tail into wind in rate mode but it felt comfortable and secretly it was quite a personal buzz to keep it going,i was convinced i would get to 55 seconds and stack it! So in reality i was as nervous as any newby to flyin's

Yeah the crash was pretty bad, that tail was going crazy near the end .. shame, because it was a lovely looking heli.

Have you sent the motor to Compass ?

Ron not at all mate. I hope my post dint read wrong!
Everyone there was more than friendly and I had some great advise from the more experienced.
I am sure if the 6hv dint go in on Sunday morning I would have carried on flying for the rest of the day. Shame!

I cant wait for next year mate.

              Thanks mate.
I spoke with the guys at Weston UK and they never seen a motor failing apart like mine in flight. I am waiting a phone call back.

Awful picture of me Sam. It shows my fat side. The other side of me looks much thinner

Looks worse than it is mate. Usual stuff really.
The motor is the expensive bit. Hopefully Weston will come back with an explanation to what happen. Very nice guys and been very helpful so far.

I do Panos,im fine on home soil but have suffered extreme nerves when flying in front of people numerous times times now.I flew once at the FoD fly in after watching Jame M,sacko,Laurence Gough,Mark E and Mike Kendell showing off their skills.I had disco legs and i think it was only my 6th flight of a FBL heli too but i just bit the bullet and went for it

i know just how you feel Panos, iv'e battled with nerves flying in front of others for years now, and although i feel that i'm a competent pilot and shouldn't have a problem the nerves take over and it usually ends up in the deck. I'm working on it though, competed in AIR earlier this year which was a great buzz and i'm doing a demo at a local show this weekend.
My point is just keep doing it and it'll get easier

I Think it's normal not to fly your best in front of people.

But I find the more I tell my self every one are at different levels and learn at different rates.

Then I just hold back a bit because it's not the time for me to try new stuff.

Chin up mate. We will sort the model

Also I have been to Charmouth and the like and not flown.
Mainly just because there isn't room

I hate flying at these also panos. my nerves always get the better of me & I end up with seriously wobbly legs & the shakes. I much rather fly at home where there's only the one flight station & I can concentrate better on what I'm doing rather than watching what or where I can fly to the sides. Beleive it or not I didn't manage to get a dozen flights in all weekend but it's ok cause it's about being there socialising more than the flying. Meeting like minded people
many who are as mad as hatters about the sport & help you out with advice or setup assistance.

I know exactly how you feel! I can fly my 450 reasonably well with no audience. Put one person behind me and my thumbs cease to be connected to my brain and it's a miracle if I don't crash it. I learnt this the first time I showed my 450 to a mate that flew only an mcpx at the time. He started next to me, but after watching how much I wasn't in control, he moved about 50 metres away in fear! I was almost shaking and for the first time felt completely out of control, purely because I was being watched.

I too bottled flying at SWRCH flyin, but almost wished I'd had a go at the 450 speed run after watching stoner mark get third by seemingly reversing tail in into wind!

Great day regardless. Shame I couldn't make the Sunday

Defiinitely will be back next year and hope to see more of you guys at the Phoenix field in the near future!
