  • Technique: where to now?

I've been flying my trex 450 for a few months now and I'm confident doing circuits, loops and rolls. I managed to do these pretty quick to be honest but I have now been stuck at this point for ages. When I fly in phoenix I feel like I'm just mashing the sticks hoping for something good to happen.

Whats the next realistic thing that I should be learning at my current skill level? Is there anywhere I can read instruction on certain techniques or watch some how-to's on how to do certain tricks?

There are some phoenix recordings of some manoevres posted at trextuning.
But there are not enough recordings avaiable of specific manoevres. There should by now be recordings of all the official 3D masters manoevres but its not happened yet.
Thart'd be more interesting for me than water effects or the heli breaking up when it hits the ground...
...surely an evenings work for the set of world class pilots that are already helping with development - a few manoevres each, how long can that take I wonder?

Best way to make progress is to keep the possibility of crashing at a constant level despite your increasing skills!

I would suggest trying to master an inverted hover, then trying inverted hover in different orientations.

Then you can try tick tocks, nose up sideways and nose down, toward you and away from you.

Then there is backwards flight. Do your cicuits and 8s backwards, then the same inverted, then the same inverted backwards. Then the same sideways...

I can do all that of course, or I will be able to, as soon as the pope quits catholicism...

So many manoevres with a heli, thats why they are not boring like planks.

Cheers Moyesboy. So you reckon I should concentrate on inverted hovers then? I have been doing them in Phoenix but not alot and certianly not enough to start doing them with the heli.

I moved on to inverted hovering a few weeks ago in the sim im happy all day long at the field I can maintain it for what feels like minutes now, but it really does concentrate the mind.

Chucking the heli around is fun, however I believe its vital to get that control over the heli in all orientations before you can really get to grips with some of the manouvers.
        All the best

I was happy hovering the 450 inverted at about 10 feet.
But when ''i started inverted hover with the rappy, I was pretty soon down to a few inches, its that much more stable - and it'll sit there pretty much in any wind.

You do want to get a reliable motor setup before doing that though!

Nerra, I am now working on inverted hovering, nose in (its the easiest). Because that get boring I also work on tick-tocks, then I spend the rest of the battery thrashing high speed circuits. I can hover inverted 30 seconds or so. Obviously I need to practice inverted hovering in all orientations, then progress to inverted figure 8's. From there its time to work on backwards figure 8's and inverted backwards figure 8's.

My understanding is one needs to master forward flight, inverted forward flight, backwards forwards flight, and inverted backwards flight. This is the basic skills set for the more complicated 3d manovers.

Out of interest mate how many crashes are you up to. I'm at 5 after 146 flights. Last one was doing tick tocks too far away from me and I lost orientation. Did £70 damage - I even bent the alloy upper head assembly (probably should keep that one to myself though). At least I didn't try a loop in "normal" mode though mate

hahaha, well I've been practicing inverted nose-in on the sim this weekend so I'll be trying with the heli this week hopefully.

I'm on the fourth crash now I think. None of them have been too bad, mostly blades and skids. The last one was just skids after trying rolls too close to the ground.

I think I'm going to take a similar path to you and learn inverted and backwards in all orientations.

the 3dx450 ali undercarriage legs are a good investment.
You just bend them straight and carry on.

The inverted practice for me is comming on very slowly, its nice to have a thrash about inbetween trying to improve certain areas.

1 Major crash with IC (My fault)
1 Major Crash with IC (Not my fault - wasnt even flying it)

dozens of crashes with the 450 and still smiling.

Thanks for the tip moyesboy (hah, whats ur regular name, i hate using nicknames). I will look for the 3dx under carriage because I seem to break the skids all the time.

I think they are the same ones I have on my Trex, bought them last year and they have survived every crash to date
