If you still have that option then you are not out of control and should take the necessary action to minimize the risk to life and limb.

The original situation was that the heli is already too close and getting closer very fast, you have time for only one instinctive reaction and I still say that should be throttle-hold as it is the only action that starts to reduce the energy in the head immediately.

Anything else depends on you making the correct choice of control input to reduce the risk and an incorrect input could increase the risk.

As an individual gets more skilled then the distance and speed at which they can make the right choice of control input is likely to reduce but there will still be a situation in which the distance is too short or the speed too great and the correct reaction will be to hit throttle hold.

Entirely depends on the young person In my book. Look at young Justin here (4 years old at the time!) 4 Year Old Justin Jee (Justin Chi) - RC Heli Stick Movement - Sep 2006 - YouTube
This kid also lost control and has flown into a crowd during a competition, followed buy quick name change from "Chi" to "Jee" by his parents. Children below 12 - no flying in public without buddy box, that's my opinion. I don't care what their "skill" level is.

Anyway, it's good that nothing happened to OP!

2 things. Obviously young people flying helis need very close supervision as they are not aware of the risk. 4 years old doing that sort of flying is amazing but very risky with no bail out option if the kid losses it. Buddy box for sure seems like the logical answer.

As for flying too close I am super careful about this but have had a couple of times through my learning phase where I have ended up way to close or over my head by mistake. Was a very big wake up call and im sure has happened to many people during the learning curve.

Problem is every time is a different situation and the correct move to get out of trouble is different. I have had a "hit throttle hold" moment when I got too far away from myself and lost orientation. At least if it was actually going to hit anyone by that stage the blades would have been at minimal speed.
And I have had a couple of times where a quick pause, refocus and stick out of trouble has worked and been the best option.

Of course I was very lucky each time, but every time is different and there is no one correct answer.

Cheers and safe flying to all

No. I don't agree. Kids are unpredictable and much easier to injure than an adult. They may be able to fly better than us, but you can't assume they will behave predictably. I do speak from experience. Capable kids are probably the worst. Better than an adult most of the time, then bananas. Mine are now in their 30s. How they survived I don't know.
