I saw Trev at DMHC today and saw his 500,it looks a perfect size and i like the overall quality, didnt see it flying but the vids have shown me all i need to see in that respect..
I was just keen to eyeball one to get an idea of the size, its more like a 600 than a 450 so perfect i reckon

well guys i flew my 500...YAY!!!!!!!
i only flew the 2100 packs for 3 mins and the 2200's for the same as the 2100's are unknown on it and the 2200's were on first cycle. it was 18mph steady wind today so it got a test in a decent wind, i left the gov off and set the idle up to 100-90-100 for reasons mentioned earlier. it will go 100 flat after a few cycles. the flying i done was pretty tame 3d due to the bloody wind but i tried some 4 pointers with it and sustained metros and big pie dishes/funnels, flips/rolls using full collective to see where it bogged etc.
first up, the 2100 revo
these packs have about 20 cycles in them on my 450se. the heli flew well with these packs and will certainly work well for those who already have them, like myself. i flew 3 minutes with them but i'm not sure of the mah's yet as i'm charging other packs right now but i will confirm what they take later.
2200 revo
this pack took 1400mah after 3 minutes of flying but i felt absolutely zero difference with the 2100's power wise. i will attribute that down to the first cycle just now as i know from experience these, infact any lipo takes 5-6 cycles to bed in.
4200 revo
i flew this pack for 5.30 minutes and just this second finished charging taking 1.6amps. there was a marked improvment in the performance, i assume due to the higher C rating available, but there was definetely more power there. as i suspected this pack is heavy and you can feel that doing some things and it does roll/flip better with the smaller packs as one would expect. again i'm slightly reserving judgement until i get 100 flat curve and less wind so i can give it some.
nothing has changed my mind with what i seen today, imho the packs to get are 2500 ish unless you already own packs then use those. i think if people want to stick with revo then the ones to get will be the 1500 mah packs made up 2p to give 3000mahs. this will have a couple of benefits i think.
1. the balance will be just about spot on.
2. the higher C rating definetely helps if what i seen today stays true when the packs are upto speed.
i can't say definitively these will work but it's my intentions to get a pack of 4 to try them.
if you want a long flying time the 4200's are absolutely spot on and i'm sure would yield 10-12 minutes or so with a 12t pinion. this is all based on my experience today, i will know more when i try more.
cheers

Some great info there Paul,cheers
I have 2 of the revo 4200`s new,2 Revo 2100`s used a bit and 2 Electrolite 2200`s nearly new..
I intend to try all three but i also agree that the ideal capacity would be 2800 to say 3300 mah for a balance of duration, power and weight

update, the 2100 revo took just over 1.1 amps after 3 minutes flying. it did kick into cold weather mode...even though it's in my room, guess they are still cold from the field, i know i am!. given this there is probably 100mah's or so missing from a normal charge i would guesstimate.
cheers

on the figures i seen today, yes. but i expect it to go up with a goto 100 curve and i can actually do more than potter about.
at the end of the day it's going to be slightly different on what your doing with it so set the time at a sensible number and work up in 30 sec increments.
i should say i spent quite a bit of time getting th mesh right as the motor seemed to move more than any other i've had when tightened down. obviously this is critical to the setup and times you will see. i'm sure someone will have covered it in a build video.

Nice write up Paul. It looks like the 4200's will be the longer flight time option or 'orientation' pack as I would call them being on the heavy side.
To get that sharp nimble feeling we all love for 3D the 2500-3000 packs look to be the pack of choice due to the light weight but the superior 'C' rating under load and correctly balancing the model too.
The 2100, 2200 whilst offering cracking performance, will be a little low on flightime and possibly lack the extra guts the 2500-3000 battery can give..but very useable none the less.
It looks like the 500 is going to be a very versatile model indeed..another less powerfull option but with decent runtime would be the 5S 3300TP Extreme V2 that JK flew outside his house over the road and houses..SIGHS!..
thanks for sharing

Ash
When i spoke to Mike on the phone we only talked about 6s,do you know if he does a 5s pack of that sort of capacity or whether he intends to?
It does seem as though Lipo manufacturers are gonna be climbing over each other to make the perfect 500 lipo...

Mike has a Revo 3200 cell available to him, I believe it's 140mm in length, not sure of the weight of a 5S pack though.
Expect to see a fair bit more experimentation, Mike is working with Trev and I'm also pitching in where I can to offer advice on what may or may not work. Probably best to sit back and let Trev do some more tests on different packs, which I'll datalog / film etc to find some good combinations.

Reason I ask is you always seem to end up with the video camera and he does the flying..
Can't he work the camera..
PS: Keep up the good work, I think its fair to say we all enjoy reading your reports..
