Brian, you are right to an extent.
Remember that dropping volts increases amps so you might not get that bigger an advantage on 3D perfromance. Also everything will run hotter due to the higher amps (ESC and motor).
However, I agree with your view that the 2200 setup is having to work a fair bit and in many respects a 6S 2500-3000 would suit better.
