I am 65 and I can roll, loop, flip both ways, fly towards me and hover without thinking about it, fly round in a circle in front of me , both ways, it has taken me 3 years to get there and "several" crashes.
I am struggling with inverted, cant seem to steer it easily, oh and i am starting to fly backwards as well
I think its all a question of stick time, the simulator helps a bit but it is not like the real thing, keep at it and you will get there
      I fly 2 x Trex600N, 1 x trex 700N, Velocity 90 and an Trex 500
I think electric models do not help, as stick time becomes limited by charging batteries, nitro is the way to go for training

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. My son was a died in the wool Nitro fan, not any more. Why? When we arrived at the field one day, I got out my 550FBL and proceed to have a flight. Son went to the shed to get his table for his Trex 600N. By the time he got back, I had my flight and was putting a Lipo in the 600E FB. He got his 600N out while I had another flight. He then proceeded to fill up his Nitro while I had ANOTHER flight with my 550FBL. He now has a 550FBL ELECTRIC. Last Tuesday we went to the field with my 550FBL, his 550FBL and his Trex 600N. The 600N NEVER came out of the bag. On the way home, he said he will keep his 600N until he gets a 90E and maybe another 550FBL.
Others in our club have gone Electric. Stick time is ONLY restricted by the amount of Lipos you have or the charging facilities you take with you. IMH&MHO.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.
Now too many Helis to mention?

            Hey Pantone,
Like others have said just keep practising with Phoenix, but keep it varied i.e dont spend hours practising one move, do a little of everything you can do or you'll get stuck in a rut. I did similar recently while trying to do inverted circuits, spent hours getting the hang of it then I couldnt do normal forward flight without smacking the 450 into the ground nose first! After doing it 4 times (and £40 later!) I calmed myself down and just went back to doing a bit at a time with my 450 Pro and now I'm making much better (and cheaper) progress. Small steps really. A good tip I had was to give your heli a bit of rudder trim (about 5 clicks) in Phoenix which will make the heli turn slowly on its own, just try and keep it in a stationary hover, this was really good for helping me with my orientations. MCPX has been great for me as I have only recently taken up the hobby, you can fly it at the park without worrying about it and it crashes well too!
Let us know how you get on.
            Cheers
            Rob

                  Hi Muscleflex

I live in Colton near Temple Newsam.

Most of my flying (hovering) is done in the back garden, however we have a fairly large fenced open space area close to where I live so will fly there when the confidence is a little higher.
It's a pity Leeds City Council prohibits flying in Temple Newsam there is tons of room with plenty away from the main public areas, but they prohibit flying. I am also close to a number of farms with fields out to pasture and I intend to approach the local farmers for permission to use one of them.

To all who have posted - a really big thanks

Well the weather has improved (by than I mean its not raining!) and encouraged by all the positive posts I thought it's time to 'tackle the demon'.

Light winds and with a shiny new 500 fluorescent tail fin (to stop me cutting grooves in the grass) I rebound the Trex to my DX6i ran pre-flight checks............... and HOVERED

Tail in (OK): Right side (OK): Left side (OK). Kept the bird within a 6 foot circle (most of the time), suddenly realised after two batteries and about 10 minutes flying that my grip on the TX was starting to hurt, as were my thumbs, but hey, the elation, couldn't stop shaking - don't push it there is always tomorrow.

I feel so much better and its thanks to you guys in motivating me to "go for it", it just goes to show how useful this forum can be other than in the sense of technical help.

                    Cheers

hey well done. I know Colton (well, not really). My girlfriend's cousin lives there - Colton Village I believe it's called! I'm in headingley
and yeah, it's a shame the council doesn't let any flying apart from Middleton which is mostly planes but there's 1 guy who flies helis exclusively. altho he's still learning

I agree it's a pity - I had considered Middleton as well as Joining PANDAS who have a flying field at Pontefract Racecourse (not too far for me), but again it's mostly planes.

At my level of competence I really feel like practising alone until I know what I'm doing.
As a matter of interest where do you fly?
