That's a bloody good question because I'm wondering that myself. Initially it was to try things on that I felt uncomfortable doing on the 450 simply because the 450 is more intimidating. Having since found that crash costs are the same I wonder what the point was, then I remember this psychological barrier. I do notice that each time I fly Larry after flying Junior I do feel more comfortable with him. Something must be working.

James, just remembered my original argument with myself, the 300X is to fly in smaller spaces. I just happen to have taken him out a couple of times to get used to him

Now that's interesting because I was thinking the same thing but then wondered if it was a little like the MCPX where yes you can get it inverted in a smaller space and do some orientation practice but given it's quite nippy you actually need a reasonably large space to do things like circles, especially if you try these in all orientation (funnels etc). I guess the real thing is do you simply end up taking your smaller helis to the same field you fly your larger helis in anyway simply because they're still to big to really fly in your garden and don't have the weight to be flown slowly enough to utilise the small space.

Hi Vikki, I know I'm a numpty errrrr, I mean newbie, but my Gaui 550(600 size) was rock solid in the wind last week. I didn't want to risk the 425(500 size) in that wind, measured at 11mph, gusting to 16. I had to run her on f mode 1, Approx + 10%-15% more than f mode 0, but I was ecstatic, as you well know from previous post!!
I'm left with the 550 at the moment, following a "moment" last night, still unsure of cause, not pilot error for a change , but had a few suggestions on my thread.
Anyway, I would choose 600 over 500 any day, given the current weather and all that!!
          Have a good weekend.
          Cheers,
          Andy

Bear in mind I have to cart these things round on my pushbike. I'm already close to choking on battery price for a 500. Mind you, the battery for my bike is £550  but that 36V, 14Ah bad boy is still going after three and a half years.

For what I do I'm happy in 10-12 mph winds with my 450X and don't mind it gusting a bit higher.

You can use a pair of 3s batteries in series in a 500 so you may not need any new batteries.

That's great, Rusty. I'd wondered about that. Oh, but my batts are 2200mAh and I think the 500 is bigger

Mind you, thank you very much for that thought. Much appreciated.

I fly my TRex 500 on 2 2200 3 cells and get around 5 minutes. Bigger batteries give a bit more flight time but not as much as you might think cos they are heavier.

Excellent! I'm convinced. I only have 6 batteries but I would buy more as I'd get more play time with the other birdies as well.

                    Thanks

I have a Mini Titan (450 size), the 500 and a 550. In my opinion the 500 is the perfect size for learning on. It handles the breeze almost as well as the 550 but will be much cheaper to crash. It also has much more presence than a 450 size so much easier to see the orientation when up high.

In my opinion, I wouldn't bother with using 3 cells in parallel, simply get yourself some Gens Ace 6 cell 3300mAh. These are £49 from Chris at Electriflyer and I get 8 minutes at 50 to 60% discharge depending on how hard I'm flying.

The only thing I would recommend is a good charger, I bought an iCharger 306B with my 500 (£120) which can charge at up to 1000W so very future proof, plus power supply (£50) and parallel charger board so I can do up to 6 packs at a time, but as I only have 3 that's what I do at the moment. These bits cost but I wouldn't go back.

I wouldn't bother in parallel either, better in series Is it a TRex 500 you have and can you get 3300s to fit under the canopy ok then? I struggle with 3000s

Thanks, James. I'm happy with my current charger and don't mind charging one at a time. I have plenty of time of an evening to charge a few batts I only fly weekdays at lunchtime and can only squeeze 3 batts through before I have to get back to work. At the weekend.... well, what weekend for flying of late I put a couple through my quad and a few through Larry and that's as much as I can handle for now. You meant series I think.

Yes its a Trex 500 ESP, The older Gens Ace (25c) were a bit tighter but still fitted if you moved them towards the nose, the newer ones (30c) fit a treat.
