  • Naming helis and quads.

As most people know I have, in common with a lot of people, a tendency to name my flying critters.

My first heli was a little red and white rescue heli and he was called Stripey. Stripey got me into the helidrug scene and addicted me most visciously.

I didn't say I was imaginative in my naming so here goes (in chronological order):

My first proper heli was a Blade 120SR and he was a slippery little customer and got called Blizzard the lizard which got shortened to just Blizzard. Blizzard finally passed away and was binned with a few kind words (I did have him quite a while).

My first mCPx seemed really happy whilst putting up with my crude attempts at hovering him and the thought came that he was 'happy as Larry' and so Larry stuck. Larry was unfortunately killed in a fast but messy manner. Another heli binned with a few kind words. His very first name was FastArse but it seemed unkind.

Next was the Blade 450, not able to think of a fabulous name for him he became Chopasaurus. I was in the period adding 'saurus to a lot of things (still do). Dougle, our dog, when he's crapping is a poopasaurus. When he's being thick then he's a DinkyDorkasaurus, you get the idea.

Well, I was being overly timid with my helis and decided to get a quad to boost the thumb/eye co-ordination thing. I got a DJI NAZA F450, and, still in the saurus era, he became Quadasaurus. He helped immensely. He was great but rapidly became my camera platform and has recently been GPS enabled, amazing!

I need a tank-it-round-the-sky quad and I went for the Gaui 330X-S. Now, compared to the DJI this critter was really fast and agile so I called him..... you guessed it, Speedy. Speedy crashed from a great height and there wasn't much left of the frame so Vikki Frankenstein (that'd be me) transplated all his vital organs onto a Gaui 500X frame. Even better, it was foldable! He's still fast.

Still Not having much joy with Chopasaurus I decided to try FBL and got a Blade 450X. He was such a joy to fly that I thought he flew like a lamb (at my settings) and that made me think of Larry the lamb, in remembrance to Larry (happy as) the 450X became Larry (the lamb). Trust me, it gets complicated later.

All I was doing was hovering him. I didn't have the courage to rip him around the sky and the weather was only giving me sim stick time and that's not quite the same when real money is in front of you a few feet off the deck hanging from something that resembles a whirling dervish. What to do?

I ordered another mCPx but this was the V2. What A cool little fella. Had many hours of hovering him at work and at home in the bathroom. Doing side-in and the like and getting a good grip on the feel of heli movement. Well, it was, metaphorically speaking, Larry (happy as) back from the dead so I called him Lazarus (look up Jesus and Lazarus if you need to). Well, he still gets called Larry on occasion so it's come down to Lil' Larry and Big Larry.

It' a tale for later but I've moved on from hovering now and was thinking of a Blade 130X as an upgradeed Lazaruz and a Blade 500X for those windier days but on reflection decided against for one reason or another and decided on the Blade 300X. Little brother to Big Larry? Yep, Junior it is, then. I'm not all that sure where Junior comes into it but I do know that he's not as intimidating Big Larry so I tend to take more risks with him where I won't with Big Larry. Oh, so I do know his position in my scheme of things, of course I do, that's why I got him. LOL!!!

    How about you?

    Best regards.

    Vikki.

I can't tell you what mine are called sometimes. But it's usually a string of 4-letter words.

I dont name my helis or my pets, it hurts too much when I smash them into the ground....

(just in case - that IS a joke (the part about smashing pets into the ground))

                    Thanks, Ross.

It's interesting in there are people who name things and people who don't and people in a little grey area in-between.

I dont name them. Nor do i name cars, bicycles or any other inanimate object. But that is probably due to age and a 'y' chromosome.

My wife probably calls them all sorts of obscene names, especially when the living room floor is covered in boxes and wires and batteries.

On the Royal Institute Christmas Lectures last year they said in one episode that they would talk about why people name things. They didn't. Maybe they need a talk about memory function. I was interested, too, because I'm a long time namer of things. Not everything mind, just some things. I name cars and bikes and toys but not tools or fridges or the like. Guess it depends how personally you feel attached to something if inclined to name things.

One thing I have noticed in myself is that some things are not always inanimate in my mind and tend towards having a personality. I always said I was barking.

The big downside is I tend to take it personally if a named item breaks down. Air generally goes a foul shade of blue!

I have a name for all of my vehicular thingies. It's really simple, they get besta in front of whatever they are. That makes my R1 bestabikes, my helis are besta 425 and besta 550, I'm sure you're getting the gist of it!!
Forgive me for being a little personal here, but, what the juice were you doing watching the royal institute chrissymas thingymajiggywotsit??? I thought those programmes were only shown when the test pattern was being coloured in. I didn't realize people actually sat and watched them!! Where abouts in Pompey do you fly btw. Are you in a club? or freelance as it were? I've not been flying long, so not too adept, but just met someone with access to the fields behind the churchillian, that has to be done surely. So, come Monday, one of my helis, (if not both) may well be called bestawrecks.
                              Have a good one,
                              Cheers
