  • Trex 500 - Advice needed on possible pinion change

    Morning chaps! (and chapettes!)

Looking for some thoughts really. I have my 500 there which needs to be totally re-built after trashing a frame a little while ago. But I've been enjoying the 600 so much I haven't got round to it Well, tonight, as the Mrs is working and I'm off I'm going to make a start.

I've been thinking about possibly changing out the pinion for a smaller one again to maximise flight times in order to use it as a 'back to basics' trainer. Orientations, circuits, transitions etc. I'm heading towards F3N/3D flying, but I want to tidy it up and hopefully become a better pilot.

It is currently set up with a 15T pinion and a 500MX motor so running about 2700rpm HS Governed.

Should I drop the pinion down to maybe a 12/13T again and make the most of the flight times, or keep it as it is and drop the throttle curve? I imagine it would be more effecient to drop the pinion and run a higher throttle curve. I use 3000s in this so should get a tidy 6+ minutes of nice training flights if all goes to plan.

Any help, as always, much appreciated

    Dani

Yeah, I control headspeed by pinion tbh as like you say, ESC's generally are way more efficient at 100%. Although saying that I don't actually know if that's true. Just what I've been told when I had some Castle questions while I was running the Ice50 on my 450.

High headspeeds are great for 3D but they kinda make me fly a bit erratic. When you slow it down it can make you think more about collective and fly smoother. At least that's true for me.

I just want to get the optimum flight times with it for a bit whilst I go back and learn the inverted piro stuff really. Hopefully I'll get that down pretty sharp. I'm almost there with it on the sim, but it's stick time and the transfer to the real thing that is the key.

Piro moves..........eek! Defo the hardest thing to do. While you're learning them make sure to practise the other way (the way you don't like turning). May as well at this point. Something I need to do more but I'm trying to nail 4 point tic tocs and piro'ing funnels atm.

I can just about to piro-funnels right way up, but inverted? Noooo Sir. I can do a full piro flip on the sim, but it's the transition between the two halves and keeping it level all in one motion I'm struggling with. It'll come for sure.

Yep, thing is after too long on the sim I start to get worse. I keep it to about 20mins at a time now. Looking forward to getting the 500, should make a fair difference to my flying....I hope! Lol.

It absolutely will! If you're doing tic-tocs with a 450, the 500 should be even better. You should bring it along to the fly-in

i am only doing normal circuits with my 500, no 3d yet. but i run a 14tooth pinion and on my 3000mah 6s i get a 6 1/2 minute flight and that drains the cells to 3.80v each. hope this is some use to you
