  • i want a bigger heli

so it's my birthday coming up...36 years young....got chatting to a guy who lives on my road while he was washing his lamborghini diablo and talking about his ferrari...his excuse is you can't take it with you So after finally recovering from severe financial difficulties over the past eight years due to a business deal gone wrong and having saved hard for months i'm looking for an excuse to move up from my Blade 450. i love flying the Avant Aurora 90 on phoenix and the align 600, i know i want to stick to flybar as i'm not overly bothered about extreme 3d. I like the look and smoothness of F3C flying but also fancy a scale heli.....so decisions decisions. I could go for an align 600 learn to fly it and then get a scale fuselage or go for a 700 F3C combo and eventually put an F3C fuse on which i like also.......funny nearly 36 and i still struggle to make a decision!!!!

I also love the way the Goblin looks.......getting into heli's may have been a huge financial mistake! lol it's so bloody addictive

TBH just buy a an align 700 and be done with it . They do what they say on the tin and shake the box and they fall out built lol. Nitro or electric its upto you which path you take

..always worth thinking ahead to your attitude to crash risks and how that affects flying enjoyment and budget. There's a heap of choices out there and if not bothered by smack flying (how many of us really can anyway?) then there's a lot to be said for staying cheapish, simple and getting some decent flight times.
..it also depends on how much you like fiddling and playing with the mechanical side of things..nitro having a bit more tuning/fiddling associated with it..and cleaning..but the obvious flight time improvements. Or seriously consider a secondhand gasser - more mechanics but extreme flight times and any scale body looks better without plumes of vapour. For that route probably better looking at somethign like a second user vario (there's been some on bmfa recently).

Of my fleet I'd reckon the simplest compromise on cost and flight times and performance is the 600N fbl. Flybars add to crash damage, fbl makes up for some deficiencies in design and a 600size non smack heli flies fine on HK 3D blades, 20% nitro and 11 minute tanks and el cheapo canopies. If i deck the skids, blades, booms and shafts and split the canopy then it should still be under the £100. Ifa goblin doesn't toast itself then £300 ??

IMO i'd suggest a 600 size heli. Maybe not as cheap as a trex 500 or similar but a great all round size. I really love me Fusion 50, great bit of kit for the money and I get 6:30 minutes on a pair of Turnigy 3300 6S lipos. I'd also suggest FBL setup also, I'm using the BeastX and it has been really good at my level of flying.

There's no "right" answer but if you aren't going to crash too often then a TREX 700n is a fab heli: you'll love they way they fly.

I was really planning to stick to electric due to noise and mess etc. I know you get longer flight times with nitro and i am extremely tempted but i just think electric would be less hassle

What helis do you have at the moment?

Have you actually seen a 700 in real life, they are quite a bit bigger than a 600. imo it all comes down to cost, I have a 600 and a 700 and I fly the 600 much more because of the crash cost increase.

Also don't rule out fbl, I never bothered with fbl untill about 6 weeks ago. I fitted a beast X to my 600 and now it flys so much nicer, I hate flying my 700 now so I need to get that changed to fbl.

ok that seems sound advice. I have a Blade 450 at the moment to be honest i am leaning more towards the 600 at the moment. i hadn't really considered Fbl as i thought it would be too good for me

I was the same! but I love it, and tbh these days its not really any more expensive. Plus there is less on the head to break when you crash

In terms of size of heli, if you can't get to see one in real life then measure of the blade span where you normally work on helis. eg the span on a 700 is at a guess about 1.6m?, I had a bit of a shock as I struggled to work on it in the spare room!
