  • How hot does your motor get? (electric boys only :)

After a 5.30 minute hard sport flight with my align 700MX motor,i can only hold my finger on the top of it for about 4 seconds as its pretty hot!.This is in both the goblin and 700E.

Is that normal?.the esc is only just warm as are the lipo packs.

There's no unusual noises in flight but im wondering if the bearings need changing...

Teflon eh, maybe it's hotter than i think then. When the weather is hot my scorpion gets hot & after 4 sec my skin would probably stick to it. I did take temps a few weeks back of motor/esc & lipo but cannot remember what they were?? The Goblin doesn't appear to have the best cooling & i wouldn't be supprised if it's roasting. I think i would be more concerened if the esc was too hot to touch

Probably worth checking your timing settings in your esc. Mine gets hot, but certainly nothing to be concerned about.

Mine gets pretty toasty despite having a fan on top but then I'm running 2300rpm.

My 600MX 510kv gets rather hot on my 600 Pro! ESC stays cool though, which is the most important thing IMO.

If you can't touch it then you got an issue somewhere probably your mesh or in correct ESC settings but if you can for at least a second or so you are ok.

I wouldn't worry at that, but you can reduce the timing a little if you want to reduce some heat.

Just to update this, I beat the hell out of my Goblin yesterday, for 4:30 at 2200rpm, and the motor was literally Luke warm to touch. You could happily hold your hand on it all day long at that temperature! I would plug your castle link in to the esc, google the esc settings for the 700mx, and check them against yours. It has to be something simple like timing or governor mode etc. How tight have you set your motor belt tension? I followed the manual, allowing the springs to take the slack, then just pulled it back slightly with light pressure and tightened the side and top bolts. Over-tightening this could easily cause excess drag and generate more heat than it should.

Well, it depends. My 600 gets only warm, but it's in a scale model and very derated (I get 10 minutes flight time off 2x3300 6S packs, it runs on 12S. By contrast, Alan Szabo flying the same ESC and motor and batteries on a 12S T-Rex 600 has the ESC battery protection starting with less than 4 minutes flight time...)

My 500's motor gets a bit warmer, this one does get aerobatted (not really 3D, just inverted flying, loops, rolls, that kind of thing). At home the motor is fairly hot, but when I took the 500 with me to Houston last month, in the 35+ C heat, the motor was hot enough that I recoiled when touching it... (The batteries also got very hot in that heat, I'm sure flying in Houston has shortened the life of my packs a bit...)

My motor gets too hot to hold longer than a second or two after a hard flight on a warm day. This is the Scorpion 4035-500kv V3 motor, but the V2 got just as hot.

I tend to find that Scorpions run hotter than Aligns, but normally provide a bit more power but of course this is motor dependent.

If I do a gentle flight the motor can be just warm or almost cold.

This is with an auto adjusting (timing) Kontronik Jive ESC.
