Converting a Hirobo SDX to electric

Following on from my Lepton build,(nearly finished, waiting for a couple of bits), i have decided to convert my SDX to electric.I have looked at doing it a couple of times, but all the conversions i have seen land up using an extremely long pinion adapter and the motor is too low in the frames.I had a good measure up , and, even though its going to be tricky, have decided to take the plunge.With a bit of gentle persuasion, a scorpion 4035 motor will fit through the fan housing,but this needs to be done accurately as there is no gearmesh adjustment.

I started this morning and have nearly finished the jig to hold the sideframes in the correct position while i machine the fan housing out to the required size.Doing this also ensures that the hole will be concentric to the
bearing.

I did a conversion for this heli in Perth...so will be interested in seeing what you do....The guy I did it for didnt want to touch the frames for the sake of resale so he ordered an extra long pinion ...worked out great...

To the untrained eye the frames wont be any different.And i am drilling no extra holes either.Should be an interesting one.I have looked at these frames time and time again , and only recently did i come up with a workable solution.

JB's will be a fantastic conversion once done, all you need to do is look at his lepton build

Quite alot out as standard, but now bored out to clear the motor.Hard part now done, just need to machine the mounting ,which, hopefully i will do next weekend.Motor will now sit right up in the frames.The steel block the motor is sitting on in one of the photos is 60mm in dia, so you can get an idea how much battery space i have.

Need a longer shaft for the motor, seems as if no one has stock at the moment.Anyway, here are some photos.....

i think you will find the fan hole isn't concentric to start with to aid the flow of air in the cooling duct with the glow engine fitted

now all you need to do is to make the carbon framed version

the modifications looking good so far on the std frame

Just machine a new motor shaft Johnny...Ive got a blank if you need it its Pre Machined "GROUND" rather I made my own and did a coupe at a time so you can finnish of the grinding to your spec......so you welcome to have it if you want..I was taking lessons on making shafts from a friend of mine who makes Gas Turbine Shafts, its got centers milled in each end so perfectly milled/ground and you can continue doing so...

It doesnt have a best before date on it, so i am quite safe. Besides i can create a crater just as efficiently with Hirobo plastic.To be perfectly honest , my flying doesnt justify it.....just yet.

Thanks for the offer.Shaft is no problem, will knock one up quickly to get everything to line up.Will then machine a couple oversize, chuck them in with my next batch of hardening and then get them centerless ground afterwards.

Seeing the weather down here this weekend hasnt been condusive to flying , i got a bit further.Turned the engine mount , now needs to have the holes drilled into it and a couple of slots milled into it ,before milling it ti its final shape.A good morning spent machining, apart from the boring bar i managed to embed in my fore arm. As per usual a couple of pic's

Was happy about the weight too, will be about 45grams when i am finished.

I was almost about to PM you to see how you're coming along with that. 'Looks good! My SDX is sitting on the shelf above me and I keep thinking should I just put an engine back it it and fly it or revisit the idea of converting it.

It does look like that motor mount fits fairly closely around the Scorpion motor so probably would not fit the Align 700 motor I have. (It should fit an Align 600 motor though).

Thats nice...but wanted to see the boring bar in the arm pics rather...OUCH BRU!
