  • tail drives

    hi guys.

this seems to keep coming up in conversation especially in the knight vs trex threads.

basically there are 4 ways currently in use.

2 stage gear and belt drive like on the knight sport, trex 600e, 600N sport, vibe 50, sceadu. Freya etc

this is nice and cheap, easily upgradeable to 2 stage torque tube but due to the tight radius of the belt at both ends and the gears its not very efficient. this leaves less power for you to put into the rotor head and affects the autos especially aerobatic ones. it is possible to damage the gears if you catch the tail on the ground accidentally (easily done when stretching autos)

2 stage tube drive like on the 600n Pro also upgrades available for Sceadu, 600e, 600n sport and I believe will be available for the vibe 50.

this is more efficent and more accurate than the 2 stage gear/belt drive as gears are more efficient than belts and also dont seem to flex as much as the load changes however depending on the material of the gears you still suffer if you catch the tail on the ground and with 3 lots of meshing going on you still lose a lot of power in the drive.

single stage belt like on the knight 3d, raptor 50, MA razor.

the large pulley on the mainshaft increases the efficiency of the belt a lot you have no gears in the system so its very durable. IME this is as efficent as the 2 stage torque tube. its difficult to quantify the differences in accuracy they gyros cover it up a lot so does that mean its not an issue? Imo single stage belt is the best compromise between efficiency, accuracy and durability.

single stage tube drive used on the synergy, Vibe 90, millenium, MA fury/stratus.

This is by far the most efficient and accurate tail drive method you only have 2 sets of gears meshing however the crown gears tend to be fairly expensive and are generally the weak link so when you do take a gear out it will almost certainly be the crown gear.

what i dont get is why manufacturers keep doig 2 stage gear/belt drives clearly less efficent and more expensive to make than a single stage belt. the only reason i can think is that its easier to convert a 2 stage gearbelt to a 2 stage tube drive. but a single stage belt is approx as efficient as a 2 stage torque tube and a lot more durable.

of course what they should be doing is doing a single stage belt and an upgrade to single stage TT for those that want it.

    what do you think?

I personally prefer the feel of the TT, I think between the single stage belt and 2 stage TT there's different compromises as you say, but mainly down to the pilots preferences.

    Good analysis...

seems fair enough to me, efficiency is difficult to judge but when the Knight 3D electric comes out we should be able to make some measurements comparing 2 stage TT to single stage belt......however, the different tail ratios will probably stuff up the measurements.

        Yep, they will...

Plus, need to be on the same machine for a comparison. 2 different machines won't be an accurate base to test on.

Another reason is (or could be...) simplicity of maintenance for the end user - the Trex 600n tail assembly is really very easy to remove from the heli, being a compact unit such as it is...
