anybody know what the differences are? i was thinking of experimenting with something.

Do you mean Lithium Iron Phosphate? Lithium Ion is the sort of battery used in laptops and isn't used for high currents. The Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are known as LiFe and are safer than Lipo, but heavier and lower in voltage. They last longer as well. They are ideal for Sport flyers when performance is not an issue, unless you want the maximum flight times.

I'm experimenting with some 700ah LiFePO4 cells at the moment. Peak discharge current - 14,000 amps (20C). However, typical discharge rates are 3C. Definitely ones to take care when using the spanner!

The energy density is about half that of a LiPo, but it is a safer technology (the lower cell voltage means you're less likely to split the electrolyte on overcharge).

Lithium-Sulfer is the next interesting development. Similar power density to LiPo and seem much safer. There is also talk of doubling the energy density too (so twice that of LiPos and 4 times that of LiFePO4) but not seen anyone get that technology into manufacturing yet.
