I was wondering how many of u guys on here is running a 12s set up on it 550e, because i was thinking of going 12s on mines but wanted to know what it like running 12s on the 550, what mah size batt are u running, min per flight(sport or 3D).

The compass 6hv running 2700 packs easily does 5 mins of 3d on 600 blades, mainly because it's both very light and efficient,a 550 would easily beat this using the 600 pro motor.
Gens ace 2650 packs will fit side by side on the lipo tray as I have considered 12s trial with my own 550,I have motor etc to do it but never got any further.

hi , do it , you love it , i have built and destroyed many 550`s using 12s , i have used the same batts thru-out , 6s 30-40c 3000 turnigys , hobbywing HV70 and 600mx 510kv , 13T slant pinion and 600e pro main gear , i found that the standard canopy fits , but is tight , so i generally use a rex 600 e pro canopy , redrilled . using 520 mains and 90 tails , got good flight time but lacked the bite , maybe it was the batt weight , 550 mains needs 90 - 95 tails to hold 14 degrees of pitch , so you`ll have to stretch , cos they will hit , 86mm tails will fit the 550 with 550 mains , but the tail lacks power , last but not least is the stetch with 600mains and 95 tails , running flat out , she will be superb , if you don`t run flat out , you should fit 105 tails or speed up the tail to prevent blow outs , good luckSeaking

i have 2 550's running 12s, mine are also stretched to take 600mm blades.
it is possible to fit batts from 2600mah to 3300mah. The batts that i have tried are
2600mah Flightpower 25C
2700mah Overlanders 25C
3000mah Turnigy 20C
3300mah Turnigy 30C
2600mah Turnigy 30C
2600mah are the best in terms of CG and also power to weight factor.
my kind of flying which is mainly average 3D, lot of rainbows, tic tocs ELE and ALE ,inverted forward & backward and some more the right way up...
doing that i get 4 minutes if just tictoced for the whole flight on 2600mahs and 4:30 on 3000mah.
add 30 seconds if you few a mix style for both batts. add another 30 for 3300mah batts. if it was a tame flight flying circuits in all orientation 5:30 and 6 mins tops on 2600 & 3000mah respectively.
all come down nice and cool with 20-15% left on batts. this is running 2300 head speed 100% flat throttle curve.
My motors are Scoprion 4025 630kv 15teeth pinon and Compass 540KV 19-20teeth pinion all on HW 70amp HV ESC. there isn't much difference in the motors apart form the compass being lot quieter, there isn't any power/torque difference in flight. i settled for the scorpion purely because the gearing for compass motor is more on the torque side and its easy to strip gears mid flight. both motors show the same batt times and load.
for me the only advantage of a 12s 550 is using low C rate batts, there isn't much difference in flight compared to a 6s 550 just that there is a lot of power but you add more weight and it doesn't fell any different, well worth asking yourself why you want to do it.
but when you stretch it to 600 it a whole different animal. in any form its practically unboggable with loads of power to spare. Plus being 12s there isnt much loss in power when the batts start to loose charge at end of flight. The batts last longer in terms of cycle.
its is well worth adding a third bearing block, the added power and torque of the motors and with the added load of a 600mm blades means in stock form you are talking may be 25-30 flights before the gears strip due to all that power. cant say the same for 550 blades as i only flew it for about 5 flights and felt its not for me and changes to 600mm blades. with the third block mod i havent had any more strip gears in 100 odd flights
i just added a third bearing block, used the standard 600 nitro main shafts redrilled a closer on the shaft to keep it at the same height for the head, cut the excess shaft use a locking collar that comes with the nitro shaft. you only need to do this the head side.Last edited by choppaholic; 13-05-2012, 09:47 PM.Trex 700N LE FBL

Main gears are easily stripped for sure. Some of my original 600 ones lasted less than a couple minutes. In the end fitted an aftermarket auto hub allowing me to use the 700 Main gears but even the 700/0.7's Mod gears where canon fodder. Moving to the Mod 1 700 gear cured the stripping and after I busted the original 1.6mm frames fitted 2mm aftermarkets to help stiffen. I retained the 2 main brg setup as I wanted the shorter shaft up top. (think there is now a short 3 brg mast available) + There are more main gear choices now.
From the outset my intention was 620 blades so cut 700 booms/tt to 20mm over the stock 600 items as it balances out the extra pack weight + use the 600E canopy to increase 'presence'. With 1750 circuit flying 6.30 is very easy on 3000/3300's. With 1975 on 620's you can get 5.30 of advanced mixed 3D. If you run at 2100 your looking at 4.30 if pushing hard.
I like the 1950/75 area on this size of blade using a large pitch range. Above 2000 I prefer to back it off a degree or so. Been flying this Hybrid nearly 2 yrs now. It shines big time in calmer weather and always puts that big smile on your face with its speed/power. Downside is I'm still FB and in a blow its compromised by its light loading and my need to use the longer plastic servo arms on the direct to swash servos. If I went FBL the mix ratio allows a shorter servo horn which would make a big difference as I could then use metal arms.
