  • Raptor 90 Carbon torque tube failure

I recently posted about the failure of my torque tube on my Rappy 90.

I have managed to photo the said parts and have also gleamed some info regarding these carbon tubes off RunRyder.

It does appear that the Carbon torque tubes are a 'Downgrade!' rather than an upgrade. Several people have had similar failures with these drives and other problems such as extra vibrations, 'noise' and of course, complete failure.
Such fixes as extra bearings only appear to smooth out any unwanted vibrations and noise but the failure of this drive shaft will still occur.

The Carbon tubes are not really designed for 'rotational' forces and probably are not suitable for the job. One fix for these is using 'arrow shafts' which have a aluminum center with a carbon coating on the outer. I have a mate who is into archery and I can confirm that these arrows a a lot stronger than the standard carbon shafts and due to the aluminum core can withstand rotational force a lot better than the standard carbon.

I hope this information is useful to someone and if I can 'save' anyones heli before they have the same situation as I did, then its a job well done!

I got away lightly with my crash, just a spindle, double link, one skid bent and the tail gears destroyed. I'd rather it had never happened at all!

    Regards Damion
