  • Moving from 450 to 500 - who's done it and not regretted it?

I'm really seriously thinking about getting rid of my 450 pro and getting a 500esp. I will be using 4 of my 3s 2200 40c batteries for the 500 if I did.

Who has gotten rid of their 450 for a 500 and been happy with it?

I figured I have my mcpx for flying in the garden and front of the house and use the 500 at the park (I have a big usually empty open park I can fly - even a nitro 40 size trainer)

Definitely not. 500 is a hundred times better than a 450.

When you start using your old packs in series, the 500 will destroy them. Especially if they are of a different age.

Best off selling them and buying some 6s 3000s.

It's not a completely direct answer to your question but I think it should help. I've not got rid of my 450 for my 500 but I never fly my 450 now and fly my 500 in preference 10 times out of 10. I still really like my 450 but if I'm honest with myself I can't think of any occasion where I'd pick it up to fly over my 500. I don't think I'll ever sell it because it was my first proper heli but I just don't fly it any more.
I remember when I was getting into helis I was told that not many people stick with the smaller helis and that is completely true. I never fly anything smaller than my 500 now.

        Hope this helps!!

500 miles better IMO, except I never seemed to have a light crash with the 500 and it would always cost me £80+

I have a range of different heli's & prefer flying the smaller ones but when it comes to field flying my 500 is my middle size so it gets flown the most but defo worth moving up a size to know how much more stable they can be.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

Mate you know my opinion, you can't go wrong with a 500. I've literally just finished building a 6s 450, it's cost me a fortune, it's a beast of a heli balances right, doesn't seem to bog when I pitch pump it, awesome stuff. But... Guess which heli got put in the boot this morning for a lunchtime fly? Yup the 500.

Since getting the 500 my flying has come on loads. And if I could only keep one heli, the 500 would still be in the boot of the car.

I have a 500 EFL in progress and may sell the 450 when it's ready to fly. They are awesome models and a bit easier to fly than the 450.

I'm having a similar deliberation at the moment, I have a Trex 450 sport fl, a trex 550 fbl and have just bought an mxcp. The 550 is really stable and predictable where my 450 fb I find so hard to fly. When I got the mcpx Im amazed at how well it flies even in wind and this is bring on my flying To me the big difference with flying stability is the flybarless system so I'm now thinking of getting an fbl 250 for the back garden or 450 for the field. Why not convert the 450 to fbl & buy a 500/550?

                          I started on my 450.

Moved to my 500 and since i have been flying it, I have only flown the 450 about 5 times

The 500 is much nicer to fly.

I still like the 450 mind you, but always seems to pick the 500 up

                            Thanks all for the responses...
I can't keep both I'm afraid so the 450 has to go. I am in contact with a guy regarding a 2nd hand 500 so I'm just still deciding..

I thought I'd look at new prices this morning and guess what... a 500EFL pro is same price as a 550..

now there's a can of worms! I'd love to get a 550! But is that too big i'm wondering?!

No such thing as too big...

The only question becomes costs. Can you afford to crash and repair a 550? The crash costs are closer to a 600 than a 500...

If the answer is yes, then go as big as you can afford (to crash!).

The bigger heli's are more intimidating and obviously a bit more restricted in where it's sensible to fly them, but the bigger they are the better they fly in my experience.

I started on a 250, then got a 500 and it was a revelation. Then I got a 600 and it was almost the same again!
