No, leave them dry or the grease will collect dirt which will erode the gears

I read someware to use wd40. It acts as a mild cutting compound to help bed/mesh the gears in. As opposed to oil or grease wd40 gets flung off.

In the interest of learning from others' mistakes..

I used white lithium grease. Made the gears all nice and quiet. Now they're black with muck and there's grease flung everywhere. No noticeable wear mind you.. looks horrible though!

So if you do grease your gears, don't go over the top like I did.. Probably some dry lube would have been a better choice.

Silicone grease is best as they are transparent. I only use it on my 12s helis. It is also recommended on the manual (compass 7hv) so I used it. Other thsn that, I leave my 450 and 500 gears bone dry.

If you were flying nitro one of the benefits is that the heli is self-lubricating :-)

I was always told not to use any lube on plastic gears but as I am building the Outrage Fusion now they recommend a light application of oil, like a lithium grease, on electric helis. (I have never used any oil on my 450s and 500 gears either)

The accumulation of dirt will depend a lot on the soil in the field you fly, so if you have sandy or loose soil you will have to really stay on top of the cleaning of things like gears, washout base and swash and tail pitch slider etc.

As a rule i would say do'nt use anything not nessasarey but i have seen some use a few drops of 30% nitro!! i suppose the idea is nitro evaporates leaving a thin film of lube on the gears.

              cheers

I put a tiny tiny spot of silicone grease on plastic gears just out of personal preference - like the stuff you see inside when you open the servo for the first time, flung onto the inside of the case. Just make sure not to get crap inside or leave any old broken pieces of gear teeth behind - jobs a good'n.

top tip of the day - dont replace gear sets on the beach if you can help it = crunchy

Thanks for all the tips. It just doesn't feel that smooth. May have to pull the tail apart and have a closer look.

Check your TT shaft.. if its pushed in too far at either end it will run rough and stiff... also check your output TT gear (the one coming out of the boom at the tail case) if thats not seated in properly, it will also run poo poo!

I would add, if you use any lube on a new set of gears you may fined that the gear mesh dose not 'bed in', as the lube will prevent this. once you have had a few flights on new gears, then lube if you like. imho i would only bother to use lube my big chopper! lmao.

Found the problem. Main bearing was toast. Replaced with some others I had that were not great but ok for the weekend. Have to order more next week. Must have been transferring the noise through the system and making it sound like the tail gears. I got some WD40 on a cotton bud and rubbed it over the gears. Got a very slight film on them all. Figured it couldn't hurt. Did 10 flights today and all seems good again.
Thanks everyone again for your useful tips.

                          Cheers
