    Opinions on possible bent shaft?

    Hi,

    Took the 450X out after work tonight and put 2 full batteries through her over grass, had a steady hover going and at the end of the second battery i went down a bit to hard on the landing the caught the blade edge in the ground. I quickly killed the power and went to inspect the damage, servos both tail and cyclic all seem fine no stripped gears, also blades are fine and swash plate is level. Spooled heli up again and she felt fine now my question is i have done a brief 10 second video on my phone of the head moving without blades on and i would like your opinions on whether the shaft or spindle maybe bent or not.

    Maybe if you slowed the vid down a coupla thousand times you'd be able to tell. Sorry, a wee joke there. I was always led to believe the only way to tell if a shaft was bent or not was by rolling on a known flat surface, e.g. a quality mirror. If you remove the main gear and set a fixed point on the head button and keeping the airframe steady, spin up the shaft from the underneath by hand you can detect the slightest out of trueness if your eyes are up to micro focusing. Then again, what's a shaft cost ? 3 for a fiver ? Heli's worth that when you consider vibration can be a killer eh ?

      put the hex driver in one side of the feathering shaft and turn it watch the blade grips if they move about then yes main shaft take out and run on a flat surface ie glass is good.bit hard to tell on the vid as u slightly move the camera threw the video

        They cost not much more than a couple of quid. If in any doubt just change it, if only for piece of mind.

          Remove the shaft and see if it's bent... if you don't know how to check it, ask someone who does... or replace it.

            Ok cheers guys will just replace it can get 2 for a £10 from midland.

              could be jesus bolt as there soft which could cause head block to wobble, bearings not great either is there any play in the main shaft bearings?

                No there is no play in the main shaft bearings but I think I will replace the main shaft anyway as they are cheap. In terms of the bolts that hold the shaft in place as these are going into plastic am I right in thinking they do not need Loctite on them?

                  good idea the head bolt and main gear bolt should be going into to nylon nut so no loctite needed
