  • Scorpion Motor shaft advice please!

Hi, I've recently bought a Scorpion HK4020-110KV for my Raptor E550. This is the first motor I have had where the shaft does not have a flat edge for the motor pinion brub screw to secure against.

My 10T motor pinion has two grub screws for locking down to the shaft.

My question is this: will the motor pinion hold ok on the shaft or do I need to create a flat surface for the grub screw with my dremel?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

    Cheers
    Dom

personally id create small flats. Its not going to harm anything and the peace of mind will make it worth the 10 minutes it will take

My pinion has two grub screws but my motor only has one flat. Im happy enough with that. I wouldnt be happy with no flats though.

For safety, before you file/grind the shaft, put the motor in a plastic bag and push the shaft through the bag then seal it with tape to prevent any waste getting into the engine.

Thanks for the advice guys - so why doesn't an expensive upgrade motor like a Scorpion come with flats already done?!

The argument used to be that hwerever they put the flat it would be wrong as pinion locations are not standard, especially if you want two flats on there.

These days most motors seem to have a long flat to cover most eventualities but even then it is sometimes not right

OK, thanks guys. I have my Dremel in hand! Any advice please on preferred attachment to cut the flat as I believe the shaft is hardened. Also, any advice on the best approach - do you mark the approx. position on the shaft were the grub screw will locate?

It seems to be the way with scorpion motors, but what don't seem to make sense is that we have or had 6 x 600 3d's with 500kv motors in ,3 had flats and the other 3 did not

All sounds way too technical to me! I just stick the cutting/grinding disk on the dremmel and run it up and down the shaft to create a flat - never let me down yet!

I tape a bag over the can, prevents filings falling into the magnets/stator.

Take your time with a Dremmel grinding disk and you cant go wrong.

I didn't put a flat on mine. I just used some of the green metal adhesive that came with my 600, and made sure the grub screw was done up tight and threadlocked.

In the event, it survived the pinion actually destroying itself (heli lost power one day, when I looked inside, most of the pinion had disappeared, it had actually shattered...)
