  • mechanical rate gyro what is this?

well earlyer i was thinking about when i use to go to the flying field . i rememberd a time when i was out with a mate we were both flying he was flying an rc heli i was flying an rc plane anyway my mates dad decided to come out for a play so out comes this great big old nitro heli i landed my plane as my dads mate is fuling up i remember thinking there should be a gyro on there when i asked my mates dad where his gyro was he said his heli used a mechanical rate gyro instead of the gyros you see on all electric helis theese days. so what exactly is a mechanical rate gyro its botherd me for ages

Literally a mechanical gyroscope to sense yaw. Nowadays to be avoided at all costs!

      Fast thumbs ? Coat !
      Trex 450 SEV2.
Trex 450 SEV2, hack, freeby, but getting expensive. Binned the bu**er !
      Trex 550 V2. Adrenalin ( brown kind )
mCPX, better than a Phoenix anyday.
      Several planks, gathering dust.

Brains and thumbs work okay, but not at the same time.

Mechanical in the sense that it had a spinning gyroscope inside whos movement was sensed by the electronics. It worked somewhat, as long as there was a bit of a breeze to keep the tail roughly in the right position. It took 30 secs or so to wind up to full speed. Heres my futaba unit from the late eighties. It weighs 100 grams thats just over 3 ounces

not to be avoided you just need to know how to fly them

but for modern 3d flying don't even fit one
for a vintage/retro or scale heli if you can fly with a rate gyro then there ok
if your used to a modern gyro stick with the modern gyro there light years ahead

i still fly an old g154
the 401/520/611/701 and spartan are miles better though

          a bunch of bls servo's and a 701 gyro
