  • tail pitch?

With servo horn at 90 degrees in rate, should the tail pitch be 0 or 5 degrees?

Mines currently at 0 degrees and my tails creeping left,so I need to lengthen or shorten my push rod?

    Thanks!

Assuming your gyro is in heading hold mode, the static middle pitch is irrelevant. The gyro will just adjust the tail to hold a steady heading.

The tail drifting is a symptom of other things - maybe too low a gain, maybe vibrations, maybe inappropriate mounting, maybe a touch of trim on the TX, maybe maybe. Some gyros require a heading hold/rate mode toggle 2 or 3 times to find their centre.

    What gyro/servo/heli is it?

      Hi,

Its a 700e with 3gx.The tail has always been a bit wooly from day 1 and now its drifting left ever so slightly.Ive uped the gain then backed it off before it wags.

I'm not familiar with that system, but some basic setup procedures could still be useful.

Does it have a rate mode?

If it does, set it to middle with the servo arm at 90 degrees to the push rod. Keeping the transfer arm at the back of the frames at 90 degrees to the frame, adjust the 2nd push rod length to give yourself a bit of right rudder at the tail blades. A really good starting point is to fold the two tail blades back so that they are parallel with each other and set it to give you 30mm gap between the tips of the tail blades. This works a treat on 30, 50 and 90 size helis. It won't be far off the natural neutral point of the gyro.

Also set your servo travel endpoints on the gyro to as near to 100% as possible, and make sure it is the same both ways.

This will give the gyro a very good starting point, but as I've said already, the drifting is unlikely to be down to the geometry of the tail. You can set up a tail with 5 degrees of left rudder (i.e. completely the wrong way) and pick it up into a hover and will just sit there. The gyro moves the rudder servo to wherever it needs to be to maintain a steady heading - that's what they do in heading hold mode.

Drifting is a sign of 'other' issues generally, unless of course it's a Futaba gyro where drifting is built in and comes as standard!
