Is it possible? Or do you need 7 channels???

Yes you can fly a nitro with a 6i.
And yes it will work with an AR7000.

Now that I think about it, back in the day we used to fly nitros on 5 channel 35 meg plane radios!

Haha fair enough, what's the benefit of having more then?

          Dx6i:
          Throttle
          Aileron
          Elevator
          Rudder

What are the other two channels? Pitch and aux isn't it?

If so, I'm guessing pitch is for flying in idle up and the tx just transmits 100% on the throttle channel for you at all times (or whatever your setting is)

So what's aux channel for? Also what does the "gyro" switch do on a dx6 because I thought the "gear" switch was for the aux channel? Or am I looking at this all wrong?

Pitch and throttle are controlled by one stick on the Tx but on two different channels so that you can adjust the relationship between the two. Most people use Throttle for throttle and Aux for pitch. The gear channel is then used for adjusting the gain on the gyro. It used to be a simple on/off type channel, so you simply set two values for it one above 50% for HH mode the other below 50% for rate mode. (If you think about it this was always the spare channel on plane radios for raising & lowering the undercarriage and they just never changed the name for helis)

People generally use the 7th channel for adjusting the value of their governer and the 8th for a
              remote glow plug ignition.
