  • Which Intermediate Heli?

    Hi all !

I was given a 3ch co-axial heli for Christmas and have been addicted to it ever since. I'm now looking to upgrade to something faster and more complex, but I'm totally confused by all the different models available.

I live in an old house with 18ft high ceilings, so have the luxury of flying indoors all the time, but need to keep to a 30-40cm length model so I've got room to manoeuvre.

Would anybody be able to recommend a brand or specific model for £100-200 which I won't destroy within 5 minutes, but will take me 3-6 months to master?

Overall which brands would people say are the best to go for? Is there any training gear I can buy to protect the heli or make it easier to fly to start with?

    Cheers

    Andy

Blade MSRX would be a good call for indoor flying. After that get an MCPX.

You can get a cheap fixed pitch to learn hovering etc but will get a bit boring after a while although the atom fp only costs £40 and is pretty tough and after a 3 channel coax is still difficult to learn and good fun.
Or you could just go straight for an mcpx and dx6i so that you can calm it down with the settings, it will still be a very steep learning curve though as these things are fast but brilliant fun, I haven't picked up any of my other helis since I got mine.
A lot of people will probably tell you to spend the money on a simulator which isn't bad advice as you may well enjoy it, I don't though unfortunately.

          Thanks everyone.

What do you think of the Walkera V120D02S and Nine Eagles Solo Pro 180 (318A) ? These were the ones I was looking at originally as they're 30cm (as I assume the bigger, the more stable to fly) and they've got plenty of plastic parts, so should take a few crashes.

          Cheers

Another vote for the mcpx here. It'll be so hard to fly initially that you'll think it's broken but after a week you'll be loving it.

It can fly upside down if you like that kind of thing - which fixed pitch can't. It is very fast and agile. It'll take you a while to fly it indoors without binning it in seconds (so much so id say take it outside until you can hover because it is very fast) but its a great Heli.

I spent 150 on a fixed pitch Heli (120sr) that bored me within a week. Good Heli, but tame. Then got the mcpx. Flew it into a cabinet hard and broke it literally within 6 seconds of Its first lift off, but kept at it and Haven't used the 120sr since. Now have a 500efl pro and shortly will have. 90 sized nitro too - still haven't flown the 120sr since February.

Btw I also have a sim, great for learning stuff an rainy days but doesn't have the same buzz as real flight hence I hardly use it.

Cheers guys ! I think its unanimous that the mCPX is the one to go for. I'll be putting an order in for one very soon.

For future reference, who would you consider to be a good sub £300 model manufacturer? I was trawling through heli sites and thought Walkera and Skyartec would be up there, but nobody has even given them a mention. Are there any particular brands I should avoid?

In sub 300£ category, there is really only one brand you want to buy, E-Flite.
Walkeras have really poor support in the UK and use proprietary radio system, the other ones I didn't even hear about.

Thanks very much for the advice everyone ! E-Flite is the way I'm going and I reckon you've just saved me from buying something totally inappropriate. Cheers

                        MCPX here too.

Skyartec, I did hear something about them, sure the words pants, cr*p and junk were in the same sentence.
