I've noticed that I battle to fly more with sunglasses than without. My first flight yesterday was without, but as the sun was strong, I did the second flight with, and I noticed I battled a bit more with the glasses. Is this normal?

Could be... But they are Oaklys... and I paid good dosh for them..
What I think it was was that I flew without, and my eyes got accustomed to the brightness. Then I started for the next flight and while the heli was idling, I put the glasses on, and maybe I should give my eyes a chance to get used to the darkness.
But I felt the same when I play golf. I play rubbish with glasses, and I play rubbish without... Oh... wait..

Hmmm, just because they are oakleys doesn't mean they are going to be good for flying with. All sunglasses alter depth perception to a certain degree, it's finding the right type of lenses that limit this while protecting your eyes. I use 'model glasses' which at £28 ain't bad plus I have contacts in to begin with which ain't 100% perfect due to being very short sighted but the lenses seem good, 3 diffrent colors too. Might be worth a look.
When at UK 3D the other week we were talking to Jamie from fast lad who had a very nice pair of oakley specific shooting glasses but they retail at over £200 !Velocity 50

Yeah, I think there is distortion on mine... I guess I'll just fly without specs. Problem is, it's just so sunny down here, all year round...

The best for picking out something appear to be the yellow tint ones..but get them from an optician not Poundstretchers!!
Test a pair in sunlight (NOT indoors). If you wear glasses the optician can dye a spare pair of prescription for you and they will still be optically ok. Yellow is the best one.
On the other hand...get an eye check if you do not normally wear glasses.
Half the motorists driving today need glasses!!

You want the blue blocking tint that I use for gliding.
These come in yellow or red or brown appearance. Mine look orange. when you look through them you can see much better through haze (and magnum exhaust), and strangely the grass looks really green.

As Fixxxer said try the 'Model Glasses' I used to fly with Oakleys but was struggling and switched to model glasses and they are so much better plus you get the three different lenses to suit different light conditions.___________________

Agreed, I picked up a pair of model glasses with the interchangable lenses their pretty good. except greasy fingerprints over the lenses when you change themOriginally posted by Chippy View PostAs Fixxxer said try the 'Model Glasses' I used to fly with Oakleys but was struggling and switched to model glasses and they are so much better plus you get the three different lenses to suit different light conditions.

I have Model Glasses with interchangeable lenses, the Red lenses are good in bright sky, and the Yellow when the skies are darker. I also need glasses, so i opted for the ones that can be fitted with prescription lenses as well,
I get on OK with them, but had to modify them very slightly as the glasses are at quite an angle to your eyes.Rob

I have only ever seen one picture of my teacher, Dave Fisher, not wearing his glasses for flying (yellow tint) at my lesson I got fuel vapour from the heli in my eyes, he said thats another reason why he wears them. The older I get, the faster I was!
