  • Solar Flare - To Fly or not to Fly...

    Hey all,

Saw the news about the solar flare which is expect on the 9th March. In my job of radio/satellite communications, these things can seriously cause hayhem and cause comms black outs.

It might be worth bearing in mind that it "could" cause problems with the radio spectrum. Which in turn could really put a downer on your day if your heli all of a sudden dropped out the sky!!

Chances are pretty slim, but something to bear in mind: For the tefal heads amongst us:

Scientists announced the possibility that a severe geomagnetic storm will affect Earth starting at around 1200 GMT 8 March; the storm could last through early 9 March. The source of the storm is a coronal mass ejection, or CME, in which charged particles ejected from the sun’s corona will enter the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

The risk to living creatures, including humans, is nonexistent. (i guess we could be put in the "living creatures" bracket - but then it is debatable!)

Effects could include degraded cellular and satellite phone communications; degraded radio and television broadcasts (the effect will likely be worst in the AM and shortwave bands); and difficulty with GPS and satellite navigation systems. Some airlines have rescheduled and rerouted flights in polar regions during the height of the storm, due to the possibility of interference with navigational and radio systems; expect some possible flight delays. The storm also has the potential to stress power grids and cause blackouts in some areas. Communications over hardwired systems (e.g. landline phones, Internet, etc.) will likely not be affected.

So, let me get this right.
We - humans- can't predict volcanos (to a set time), earthquakes or even the weather, but we can tell that the sun is gonna let one go between the 8th & 9th of this month, within a 12 hour window.....

How that works is beyond me.

    I learned a lot on 00:00 31/12/1999

The Sun has already ejaculated and thats when the nastly particles are gonna be in the same bit of space as we are

No it's not a prediction, it happened 3 days ago nearly. It takes a long time to get here. The only reason they're that accurate ever is when it's already happened

Do you have any links to information on predicted changes to magnetic and electric field strengths? I expect it's worse the further north you go.

I would think that the poles will be affected the least as the field strength is greatest at the poles. Away from the poles you might get some fluctuation.

If I was you guys I wouldn't fly. Nope the Solar Flare resulted in me crashing my 450 this evening. Nothing to do with my stupid thumbs going the wrong way on a banked turn, nope it was the Solar Flare

50%+ of all broadcast weather forecasts are actually weather history. I wouldn't mind if it was explaining the differences in the actual weather we got compared to what they forecast previously, but it's a load of useless "today it was really windy in Lerwick" or "it was the dryest/wettest/warmest/coldest Tuesday since last week" useless trivia instead of actual forecast!

Read somewhere that it is actually very good for the earth, one of the things that is helpfull is suns radiation is negative while the radiation from Japans nuclear accident is positive, the negative radiation helps cancel out positives harmfull affects on us and the planet, anyway that was the jist of it.....

Flare, shmare, who gives a toss ? Just let me see the sun, I ain't too sure if it's still there or not. Did have one odd little wobble on the last sortie this afternoon tho',. Nope, in retrospect that was normal for me
