  • Unofficial flying club

On the first Sunday of every month I organise a sports hall for people to fly in. We normally have 6 - 8 people turn up so it works out about £5 per person for 2 hours (we pay £30 for 2 hours)
I ask that people pay on the day, I thought this was fair, and the more people that turn up the cheaper it'll cost for everyone.
Unfortunately this weekend it was just me and another chap. Great, lots more space to fly in. But I ended up covering the cost. Obviously I can't afford to do this again.
I was thinking of asking people to pay a month in advance but what if I get more people than expected and end up with Extra money? I'm not in it to make money and I certainly don't want the people thinking I'm taking their money off them?
Or I suppose I could create a proper club. But then we'd have to find more people to become members.

Can I have your opinions and advice please as I don't want it to go under because everyone really enjoys it.

So what's the problem with your current arrangement? Maybe you just need some kind of forum/facebook/google+ page to coordinate who is coming, but other than that seems a perfectly proportional system: the more people they go, the cheaper it becomes and the other way around, the less people the more space. If you coordinate over the internet you will probably have a rough idea of how many people will attend and you can decide whether to book the hall that Sunday or not...

I think making a proper club involves a lot of other responsibilities as well, not that is a bad thing, just different...

Publicity has got to be the key Dan. You've kinda started here, but not much in the way of details. I would post up location, contact details (facebook stuff) get some youtube footage posted. Get a web site ...................

Good luck and go for it.

It is good if there's more space, but Im the one who pays for the hall if no one shows.
At least half of the fliers are retired and don't know how to turn a computer on let alone use facebook I do however ring them regularly to keep them informed.
I guess I could put up a few posters about. But I don't know what else I can do as far as advertisement.

keep it at £5 a head if more turn up then you have a float to pay the fee's if less turn up the next time

put an ad in the local shops
and take the phone numbers of the ones that attend so you can invite them back to the next one

We fly at Llantarnam leisure Center (Cwmbran) on a Sunday 9-11.
I know they're not the best hours but where waiting for a slot on a week day.
I like the idea of a float, I think that might be the best way. Thanks For the input guys

I would find it hard to go Sunday morning as its light outside so if weather was flyable then I would do that.
Surely a evening people that haven't flown would turn up. Plus people have had a chance to get ready in the day.

                  Have you tried evenings ?

most leisure centres are fully booked weekday evenings. As soon As space becomes available then we'll get. Until then were stuck on a Sunday.
We can use the sports feild too, that we can use any evening, but at the moment it's too dark in the evenings.
