There is a limit on paypal, it's about £4k or something I think. ( might be wrong on the figure )

Bank transfer should be safe though.

careful, theres lots of scams. Tell him to send a cheque, or pay by paypal.

With paypal you are safeguarded by them. With a cheque, when it clears - you send out goods.

With bank transfer, although mostly ok - there is a way to recall funds. I dont know how, but I have heard of it being done.

Better safe than sorry. Personally I'd insist on paypal, or sell to someone else.

Open a new bank account online (takes a few minutes) and make sure you enable 'online' banking. Give him the account number and sort code for that new account. As soon as the money is deposited, transfer it to your 'normal' account using online services and leave the new account just sitting there with nothing in it. Direct bank transfer is pretty safe - people can put money in but can't take it out without added scurity information. Do it this way just as a belt and braces approach for peace of mind. This way, you haven't given out your more precious 'normal' account details.

proberbly ok but i have never used bank transfer for payment before and dont like the idea of giving bank details out (who knows what you can do with an account number and sort code these days)

Cheques arent guarenteed though anymore as far as I understood.

Never been stung by using a Bank Transfer, but im sure there are ways :S

I would happily accept a BT.

I think with PP its more to do with how many and how often the transactions are.

I spend and receive a fortune with it and only had my account suspended once or twice iirc due to them thinking I was a business so they wanted to check details.

The guy who bought my old car insisted on bank transfer as it was the easiest and safest way, took about 5 minutes and I had £10k sat in my account. I rang the bank straight after and transferred it as I was paranoid about a scam but the bank assured me it was totally safe.

Ive accepted bank transfer for many things, including a couple of rare-ish sequencers/synths worth about £1500 each. Never had a problem yet (firmly gripping my wooden table!). I even once bought a ticket to see Tom Waits from a guy on gumtree for about £100 by bank transfer. Tickets never showed, Guy went incommunicado, and the bank did diddly. Ended up being the guys local Federali's that sorted it out. He had given me his genuine name, address, occupation, and bank details, and he still tried to bump me!!! Got my sheckle back with an apology letter! my point being that the only way for me to get my money back after the bank transfer was by getting the police involved, which wouldnt happen if the seller (you) is legit.

could always send you cash in a recorded letter, when you get it send the goods.

                              bank transfers cant be reversed.
all he needs is your sort code and account number, both will be on the bottom of your debit card
