  • Need Help Making The Right Decision - £900 Budget

For those of you who have not been following my threads I will bring you up to speed.....

1 Month ago - Bought an Atom FP, Loved it, brilliant little Helicopter

2 Weeks ago- Bored with the Atom, needed something bigger. Bought second hand T-Rex 500 setup and got a copy of Phoenix, progression has been good.

1 Week ago - Son and I decide we love flying Heli's, Son puts is RC car up for sale - He has a T-Rex 450 on hold for him pending that sale.

Last Night - decided that I could sell my fishing equipment as it was just gathering dust. Want to put it toward something like a 600 (Probably Electric) and better Radio (Dx7 or above)

Today, a Bulgarian bought my fishing gear which means I have a total of £900 to spend. now i know this sounds a little rushed, but .... who cares, its my money and this makes me happy

Do I go new? Do I go used?

    HELP!!!!!!!

Without wanting to start another nitro vs electric holy war...you might want to give nitro a try, it has a different feel to electric and if you want to fly all day at the field the initial investment is smaller (no need for loads of batteries or on-field charging equipment). That being said, nitro fuel is expensive.. a 20 quid 5 litre bottle will last you about 10-15 flights so keep that in mind

I have a trex 600 v2 nitro and I'm very happy with it. I also progressed to that heli from a trex 500 and the size difference is huge. Much more stable in the wind too. I think a 600 whether electric or nitro is a good choice

      600EFL from RC711 and a DX7.

Remember the cost of packs and a charger.

Yes mate, at least for a little while - I'd actually like to have 3 so I am never without something to fly after the inevitable crash

Sacko, I don't want to build it either. That aint for me. Will practice that kind of stuff on the 500

I am good for a charger (could be better) but ok for now. Batteries are gonna kill me though That is why I was "considering" someone who is trusted and is selling up.

Dam, I know what you mean though I would like a fleet of heli's too.

Just remember the new 600 needs a 12s lipo (2 x 6s packs). Thats the only thing stoping me getting one as the cost of packs are £150!

Yeah, and this is why I need to weigh up new vs used

Well, if you get into bigger helis, sooner or later you will have to build.

You can get ready to fly 600 3GX from one of the leading shops for £900, but you will not know what to do in case of malfunction or a crash.
If you buy second hand, unless you know the person very well and have seen the heli flown many times, I'd strip and rebuild anyway.
600 and bigger size helis are serious, you don't want anything to go wrong, just for your own safety.
Battery costs on a 600 or bigger are substantial, even if you buy from HK.

Have you thought about getting a 550? It uses one pack and costs much less to maintain.

p.s. To be honest, if I were you, I'd invest in quality radio like dx8 or futaba 8fg, maybe in a very good charger (powerlab or similar) and put the rest of the money aside for maintenance of your existing helis. Maybe take your son to Dave Fisher flying school and get a lesson or two on a 700 heli, so you see how it feels.

Slight exaggeration on pack prices there! Top end packs like Optis aren't needed when learning.

You really shouldn't rely on other peoples building skills, and buy secondhand! Even when buying secondhand gear you should always strip it down and rebuild.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am 99.9% sold on the Align Trex 600EFL Pro Super Combo with 2 Spektrum Satellites.

I cant make up my mind if I should get a new DX7 or get second hand. Unless I can look at what I am buying I don't feel comfortable.

I will have to wait for batteries which is not an issue as I wont be flying it right away.

                        So that's that.....

                          If it were me, I'd get the 550E 3G + DX7

                          Remember, bigger isn't always better

EDIT: Also, if you spend the £900 on a new Trex 600 + batteries etc .. and you crash .. Are you going to be able to keep up with the high cost of the repair bills every time you crash ??

I would go with a trex 550 fbl, maybe second hand or get the shop to build it, midlands do i think, and as said a dx8 and a good charger/lipos.
